South Plainfield is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 15,828 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of the county and along the New York–Newark border. South Plainfield is bordered by Hackensack to the north, Kearny to the east, Plainsboro to the south, and Princeton to the west. The first Europeans to Visit South Plainfield were Dutch traders in 1624-25 who went ashore on Long Island Sound and observed an Indians Trading Post there which they called "Willemstadt". In 1638 Englishman Sir George Carteret arrived at Staten Island with his fleet and anchored off what is now South Plainfield. He sighted a huge tract of land extending from New Jersey down into Delaware and he named it after himself - Carteret's Land (today's Jersey City). On December 21st 1764 General John Burgoyne led his army against Robert Morris' forces at Saratoga campaign. On July 14th 1775 British General Monmouth surrendered at Camden Yards near where South Plainfield stands today. The area that would become South Plainfield was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1624-25 when they landed on Long Island Sound and discovered an Indian Trade Post called Willemstadt (later renamed Carteret's Land). The Englishmen also visited this spot in 1638 but did not name it after themselves as they had done with Saratoga Campaign Victory Field (now Newark) earlier that year. The earliest land grant for present day South Plainfield Township was made on November 10th 1812 by Colonel James Peebles to Cornelius Vanderbilt who later sold it to Phillip Livingston for $10,000 cash plus 5% interest per annum payable annually until maturity on October 1st 1814. For several years afterward various investors tried unsuccessfully to purchase back Peebles' share but failed due largely to competition from John Dolan who purchased much of contemporary West Orange Township prior to its incorporation into Bergen County in 1874). In 1764 General John Burgoyne led his army against Robert Morris' forces at Saratoga campaign while Major General Benedict Arnold commanded American forces attacking Britian from Canada during Cornwallis' Invasion; both Generals are buried near each other outside East Rutherford in Princeton Cemetery #2 today......... Aftermath of battle left many dead & few horses... One settler noted: “We lay upon our stomachs among them’ [Rockefeller] At least 126 men were killed outright including 20 officers... Many more than that were taken prisoner or captured ridden across country before finally being liberated about two weeks later...... A few miles distant stand two small hills known locally as Girders which served as battlefield hospitals.... Today only one remains standing – Girders National Battlefield Monument – located adjacent to Route 9 just past Route 202 exit 8A/9A

There were 2,094 housing units at an average density of 827 per square mile (317/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 80% White European American and 20% Black or African American; 0% Native American; 5% Asian; 4% Pacific Islander; 1% from other races; and 1% from two or more races. The town of South Plainfield was founded by the Dutch in 1664. It was renamed to Plainfield in 1798, after the Battle of Plainsborough, which ended the War for Independence. The town had a population of about 50 people in 1800 and grew rapidly during the 19th century with many new construction projects. In 1857, Plainfield became one of two towns in New Jersey (the other being Paterson) to be incorporated as a village. The village had a population of around 150 people in 1860 and grew even more during the 20th century with many new construction projects. In 1960, Plainfield merged with neighboring Township of Monmouth to form the current township.
