The original residents of South Plainfield were mostly Dutch and German immigrants from what is now Holland and Germany. By 1890, when the first post office opened in town, there were just six residents living in town – four farmers and two men working for one farm out of necessity because they could not find any other jobs. Although there had been some settlements here since before European settlement began (the first known reference to “South Plainfield” occurs in 1682), it wasn’t until after 1800 that anything more than rudimentary form of agriculture or manufacturing started to develop hereabouts; until then only hunters and gatherers used these lands. In 1810-11 settler John Hesselman built a small house on what is now East Center Street near where Route 22 intersects Route 82 today – he named his home “Hessleman’s House” after himself and his brother-in-law Jacob Hesslemann (1781-1842). In 1813 another early settler, Nicholas Rochefort (1768-1838), also built a house on what is now North Center Street near Market Street; he called his property “Rochefort” after himself and his father, Isaac Rochefort (1748-1824). Even though South Plainfield had no permanent residency whatsoever until October 15th 1903 when it became an incorporated village under the laws of New Jersey due to growing population pressure within Morris County – thanks largely to large families moving into this area during the late 1800s – development nonetheless proceeded steadily throughout most of those years without any major incident or interruption save for one very brief period in 1827 when five farms around town all together went bankrupt because their owners couldn’t pay their bills! It wasn't until about 1830 that anyone even considered building a school on these lands because back then it was simply too far away from anything else for farming purposes or for transportation convenience; as such only one small cottage actually stood up as public School #1 hereabouts until about 1850 due chiefly to lack of space elsewhere within our township! As mentioned earlier however, despite slow but steady development over many decades things did take an abrupt turn for the worse around 1900 when large numbers of Dutch Immigrants came flooding into this country looking for new opportunities while still retaining their traditional ways which led ultimately to social unrest both inside our township as well as outside thereof culminating with several days long violence leading eventually to Township incorporation proceedings being filed against us all! While we may have experienced some initial difficulties during this time period starting with infrastructure problems caused by congestion resulting from so many newcomers arriving at once we quickly bounced back relatively unscathed given our strong community spirit & overall resilience which has helped us maintain relative peace & prosperity ever since! Nowadays we enjoy excellent schools, vibrant businesses including several healthcare providers as well as ample open spaces sprinkled throughout our municipality providing plenty opportunities both indoors & outdoors which continue to be key drivers behind South PlainFIELD's continued success story!

South Plainfield is a town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 15,853 at the 2010 census, down from 17,531 at the 2000 census. It is part of Union County. The area now known as South Plainfield was first settled by English settlers in 1684. It was incorporated as a borough on April 10, 1868, from parts of Rahway and Clark Streets south to Easton Road and north to Summit Avenue. On July 1, 1898 it became a city when it combined with Rahway and North Caldwell townships to form Union County. The name "South Plainfield" originated from the fact that there were no woods or swamps here until after the turn of the century when development began along what is now Route 22. In 1951 South Plainfield voted to become an independent municipality which continued to be governed by its own government until 1998 when it merged with Rahway and North Caldwell townships to form Union County again. In 1960 South PlainFIELD voters chose not to secede from Union County and remain within the county despite pleas from some residents who felt they had been left out of economic development opportunities in Ramsey Township adjacent to their town limits. In 1998 this decision again came under fire as some businesses within South PlainFIELD had difficulty getting state or federal funding due to their lack of partnerships with other municipalities in Union County while others saw little change since Mayor John Rooney led the community through its most difficult time yet during his term in office (see also: City Council meetings). After months of public comment and analysis by township officials Community Development Director David Goldstein recommended that South PlainFIELD merge with neighboring Rahway Township so as not have 2 sets of governing documents separate from each other - something many residents felt would benefit both communities but ultimately did nothing more than further divide an already divided town into those who supported merger and those who opposed it ( see also: Community Development Director David Goldstein's recommendation for merger ). Despite opposition among some residents vote-less majorities were passed by Borough Councils on November 3rd 2007 granting final approval for merging two struggling neighborhoods into one vibrant community On January 1st 2009 all governmental functions for South PlainFIELD were ceased effective following unanimous vote by all members of Borough Councils except Mayor John Rooney who retained direct control over municipal operations pending reorganization plans currently being considered by NJDOT . As part ofNJDOT's reorganization plan all government functions will be discontinued effective January 1st 2009 effective immediately upon receipt of notification from Borough Councils
