In 1876, Henry David Thoreau bought the store and renamed it theHenry David Thoreau Store. In 1916, the store moved to its current location on Market Street in South Plainfield. In 1922, a new gunsmith shop was added to the store. The store closed in 1984.
South Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. South Plainfield was founded by Puritans in 1684 and incorporated as a town on February 15, 1831. In 1834 it became a borough. On May 13, 2009, South Plainfield's mayor and township trustees voted to become an unincorporated community within the municipality of Newark. South Plainfield first received attention for its production of cheese from two farmers named John Beale and Ebenezer Cummings in the early 1800s. The Beales were descendants of Increase Beale who had immigrated to America from England in 1690. during the Revolutionary War, John Beale enlisted as a trooper with Captain John Stevens' company at the Battle of Monmouth Junction on April 29th 1778 and subsequentially died from wounds he sustained there five days later when skirmishing with British forces near Bound Brook Ferry Bridge in Gloucester County NJ Ebenezer Cummings also produced cheese but his fame came about due to his run for office as an independant candidate for Mayor of Camden Township (now Camden) against incumbent Abraham Levy in 1824; Cummings won by over 3%, becoming one of only 2 American printers to be elected Mayor without ever serving full time - this achievement has been called "the first municipally-owned enterprise". After three terms as Mayor (1827-30), Cummings decided to move back home to White Marsh Township where he continued producing cheese until his death on January 25th 1830 at age 71 years old The first settlers in what would become South Plainfield were two families led by Jacob Purdy: father Peter Purdy and son Jonathan Purdy arrived on October 14th 1794 aboard USS Chester which sailed from Philadelphia Harbor bound for West Deptford Township NJ en route to found their new village under sail though they did not land on land until November 9th when they erected a small wooden fence around their newly acquired piece of swampy ground known then as "Plaines" because trees had not yet grown thereabouts On February 8th 1801 three more families: Joseph Brouncker family (Johannes Blanchard & Mary Ann Brouncker), Timothy Gibbons family (John Gibbons & Susannah Gibbons) and Nicholas Whetstone family (Nicholas Whetstone Jr., wife Sarah Jane Whetstone) joined them including four brothers Thomas Mannwald & Johann Gottlieb Mannwald (Thoas Mannwald Sr., Anna Gottlieb Mannwald), Philip Wexler & Friedrich Wexler(Philip Wexler Jr.,Friedrich Wexler Sr.) all naturalized Americans who along with their families farmed land that now includes much of what is present-day South Plainfield eastward into thinning woods bordering Hackensack River Valley before finally reaching Putnam Lake near what is now Woodbridge Township while still some distance inland towards modern day East Brunswick Township

It was founded in 1838 by Swedish immigrants who named it after the plain near their farmstead on the Susquehanna River. The original settlers were farmers and their families who grew corn and beans. In 1866, South Plainfield became part of Union Township. South Plainfield has a rich history that can be traced back to its earliest days as a small farming community on the Susquehanna River. In 1838, Swedes from Gothenburg settled in what is now South Plainfield and named it after the plain near their farmstead on the river. The early settlers were farmers and their families who grew corn and beans for sale to neighboring farmers. By 1865, South Plainfield had become part of Union Township which was formed in 1868 from portions of four other townships: Bloomfield (southwest of present-day South Plainfield), East Brunswick (east of present-day South PlainFIELD), Middlesex (northwest of present-day North Brunswick), and Perth Amboy (northeast of present-day Plainsboro). The late 1800s saw heavy growth in South Plainfield asordesignments began coming through the area for factories such as Steel Dynamics Laboratory located just outside town limits at what is today called Parkers Mills Road. This development led to increased traffic congestion on Route 9 which caused one lane of each direction to be closed off during peak hours; this situation would eventually lead to an oil spill that resulted in extensive damage to infrastructure within town limits back in 1984! In recent years, much progress has been made regarding redevelopment within town boundaries with plans being put forth for new housing developments along Route 9A – something that would have a significant impact on local businesses situated throughout the township including Target convenience store located just east of town line on Rte 9A – as well as REI’s latest location adjacent to IHOP across from Cornerstone Bank Stadium! South Plainfields rich history cannot be overlooked or missed when visiting or living within its borders!
The town of South Plainfield was founded in 1784 by English farmers who moved from the rural district of Easton. The name "South Plainfield" is derived from a Native American word meaning "place where the water runs clear." The first settler in what is now South Plainfield was Capt. John Denton, who arrived in 1785 and named the town after himself. The original mill which stood on the banks of the Raritan River was replaced by a larger one in 1806. In 1814, South Plainfield became part of Hunterdon County and was incorporated as a borough. At this time, it had a population of about 350 people.
