On May 4, 1814, what is now South Plainfield Township was split off from Middlesex County and became part of Uniontown Township. In addition to its role as an important shopping area for residents in eastern Middlesex County, South Plainfield also offers a variety of cultural attractions including two major theaters – North Shore Reprisal Playhouse on Route 73 just north of the town center and Linden Center forthe Performing Arts south of downtown – as well as numerous museums including the Morristown Museum District and Plainsboro Community College’s John Lappan Campus located within walking distance of each other. In recent years, South PlainFIELD has seen some investment with new development taking place around CLOSED SCHOOL sites (school districts have closed due to financial difficulties) like: The largest project so far is located near Exit 10A off I-95 known locally as "The Zone", which will be home to over 1 million square feet (1006 m2) worth of mixed use development with office space, retail units, residential units above ground parking garage etc.. This project should begin construction later this year or early next year with expected completion in 2020
