In 1857, the first Powder River Arsenal was built in South Plainfield, New Jersey. It was used to produce blue shot and black powder. In 1902, the Arsenal was moved to Aberdeen, Scotland.

South Plainfield was once a thriving town located in what is now Jersey City. The community was founded by English settlers in the early 1600s and quickly grew into a bustling center for trade and commerce. By the 1800s, South Plainfield had become an important cultural and political center within New Jersey. It played host to numerous political events, including the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. In addition to its importance as a political stronghold, South Plainfield also became a popular shopping destination due to its wide variety of crafts and products available at local businesses. The community gradually lost itseconomic significance over time, but it remains an important historical memory thanks to its rich history and vibrant culture.
The Township of South Plainfield was founded in the early 18th century. The township was named for South Plainfield, a small village in Middlesex County, NJ. The first settler in the township was Nicholas Arsenault, who arrived in 1765. In 1801, the township was divided into two parts: the eastern part became known as West Plains and the western part became known as East Plains. In 1871, both parts of the township were combined to form a single municipality called South Plainfield Township.
