South Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 17,816 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Morris County after Paterson. South Plainfield is one of three townships in Morris County and it is bordered by the borough of Flatbush to the north, East Brunswick Township to the east, and Trenton Township to the south. The first European settlers arrived in what is now South Plainfield around 1802. They were farmers who raised corn and other crops on their farms until about 1840 when they began to build up into a small town with 100-300 residents. The first store was built in 1846 by Increase Sherman and his brother-in-law Isaac Reed. By 1860, there were 10 stores in town with a total of $1,500 worth of merchandise sold each month. In 1865, South Plainfield became part of Uniontown Township which also included Caldwell and Glassboro township. In 1870, Uniontown Township was divided into two parts which would become known as North Uniontown (later called Plainsboro) and South Uniontown (later called West Uniontown). North Uniontown continued to be governed by a board of trustees while South Uniontown became an unincorporated community within West Uniontown township under the authority of its own board of trustees. On July 1st 1876 South Plainfield incorporated as a town pursuant to an act passed by the Legislature on that date The first post office opened in South Plainfield on October 12th 1876 On November 15th 1877 John Fenton established another store in town after closing his previous business at 111 Main Street On December 5th1877 Jacob Ruppe opened a flour mill at 204Main Street which would become one of many mills operated throughout Morris County during this time period Heldenbrandt's grocery storeopened in 1886 at 209 Main Street which would remain open until being closed circa 1970s vernacular clothing store "Granite" located at 222 High Street from 1902 until 1978 according to local historian Dick Greenwald (see photo below) joined forces with Henschel & Son dry goods company located on Livingston Avenue east of US Route 9W between 1951-1957 before moving west across Route 9W towards Reading Borough limits

South Plainfield was first settled in 1676 by English colonists. The town became a part of New Jersey in 1777, and was incorporated as a township on February 14, 1834. South Plainfield is located in Union County, New Jersey, and has an area of 61 square miles (158 km2). It is the largest township in Union County by land area. The population of South Plainfield was 744 at the 2000 census. The history of South Plainfield goes back to 1676 when English colonists arrived in what is now Union County, NJ. They were looking for a new place to live after leaving their home country during the Cromwellian War which ended with the Restoration of England. The English believed that they would be safe living near some people who had been loyal to the king and his new regime. In 1677, the settlers from Easton started moving into what is now South Plainfield Township under the leadership of Captain John Richardson. At first, there were only about 50 people living in this small town that grew quickly because it was convenient to trade with other parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. By 1700, however, South Plainfield had over 1000 residents and prospered commercially due to its location between two major trade routes-the Susquehanna River Valley and Philadelphia-and its good transportation connections thanks to two bridges that led directly into Philadelphia from southcentral NJ。 During the Revolutionary War (1775-83), many German Americans served as soldiers for Patriot forces including Colonel Samuel Lukens who fought at Saratoga Brigade under General George Washington as Lieutenant Colonel UST., later colonel United States Army (1799-1802). Many Germans also migrated westward to join Patriots during this time period; one such example being Johann Peter Kapp from Doylestown who served as captain general’s aide de camp under American General John Burgoyne at Saratoga Ridge (May 1779). A large number of Germans came downriver through Northumberland County settlement where they founded Springfield Township on August 6th 1778 just north of present day Camden while still living among their family members who resided there before coming downriver. Illinois native Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz became one hundred percent German speaking when he moved Downriver with his family from Nassau County Germany on October 11th 1785 en route to join British troops fighting against France aboard HMS Centurion off Long Island Sound on October 20th 1785 while serving as lieutenant commander aboard HMS Bulldog off Staten Island on November 13th 1785; all without incident! From here until he reached America via shipwrecking off Cape May following Hurricane Sandy in 2012, Leibniz wrote articles called "Ode To A Shipwrecked Gentleman" published posthumously by his son Friedrich Wilhelm Leibniz Jr.. This article discusses how life ashore helped him develop important scientific knowledge about salt water environment which eventually allowed him contribute significantly towards understanding oceanography today! In short, these early pioneers went out into our beautiful state/nation searching for opportunity and found it!
The township of South Plainfield was organized on March 12, 1795, from parts of the town of Plainfield. The first settler in the township was Nicholas J. Fenton. The name "South Plainfield" is derived from a tributary of the Passaic River called the "South Plains." On July 1, 1857, South Plainfield became part of the new East Jersey Township. On January 15, 1912, South Plainfield became a part of New York City and was annexed by that city as an independent borough.
