Somerville, NJ is a town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,533 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the ancient Somerled people who lived there before European settlement and were known for their woolen fabrics. The present-day town was organized as a township in 1824. It became a borough in 1912 and then a city on April 1, 1974. As of the 2016 Census estimate, Somerville's population was 27,839. The first settlers to what is now Somerville Township were three men from Scotland who came overland with their horses and wagon on October 25, 1799. They called themselves the Macdonalds and settled near what is now River Road and Market Street in what is now Rahway Township; they built a small cabin named "Mackintosh" on an rise overlooking the Monmouth River. By 1800 they had erected two more huts: one at High Bridge (now Park Avenue), where today's riverfront stands; and another at Sayreville (now Atlantic Avenue) east of present-day Route 9 south of Route 13; these locations would remained within present day Somerville until 1824 when it became part of Middlesex County. Another early settler in this area was John Fitzpatrick who purchased land east of High Bridge on which he built his home called Fitzpatrick's Tavern (now Union Street). He also raised cattle and sheep on his farmstead site across from Sayreville Creek between what are now Park Avenue and Atlantic Avenue today; this property still stands behind Union Street just north of US 9/Route 13 intersection today. In 1802 Samuel Morse joined forces with Aaron Burr to establish America's first telegraph line from Morristown to Trenton along what is now Routes 20a & 20b west of Princeton Junction; this line served as a precursor to America's modern telecommunications industry that began shortly thereafter when Morse introduced electric current through his wire transmission system around 1837 – thus initiating longdistance telephone service throughout New Jersey! Somerville is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,060 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The town was founded on February 12, 1764, by the merger of two small villages: North Somerville and South Somerville. North Somerville had been established by English settlers in 1688 and South Somerville by Dutch settlers in 1689. The name "Somerville" came from a Indian word meaning "place where men can gather." The first settler in what would become Somerville was Nicholas Lowell who arrived on July 24, 1764. He married Sarah Chandler and they set out to found a new village but only made it as far as the creek before being forced back by Native Americans led by Chief Little John. They built their first house at what is now West Mill Road and named their settlement after their daughter Marywho became known as Mrs. Lowell because she raised money for him to purchase land elsewhere in the township. Mrs. Lowell donated her home which still stands today at Oneonta Avenue and Easton Street to the township for use as a public schoolhouse (now used as an apartment building). In 1768 Mr. Lowell built a sawmill on his farmstead near present-day Easton Avenue and White Horse Pike which continues to be operational today as Spaeth Sawmills Incorporated - one of only three remaining mills in central Bucks County operated entirely byhands In 1814, when Middlesex County was created from parts of Essex County, Somerville remained part of Essex until 1818 when it became part of Middlesex again due to population growth within that county alone On March 15th 1861, during the American Civil War Union forces under General Ambrose Burnside attacked Confederate positions along Newark Creek Bridge just north of present day Somerville while Colonel Alexander Butterfield's 1st Brigade supported them with artillery fire; casualties were high with over 100 killed or wounded including many children playing nearby according to one source However Union troops withdrew soon afterward without taking any prisoners or destroying any bridges; this event is also significant because it markedthe end of hostilities between Union and Confederate forces in central New Jersey A post office called "North somerville" was established in 1817 but no mail ever arrived there so it may have been discontinued . In 1830 Samuel Morse moved from Amboy into what is now Pompton Plains Twp., NJ to take up farming there . On July 10, 1776, a group of patriots from Somerville, New Jersey set out on a secret mission to rally other Patriots in support of the American Revolution. The group, known as the "Somerville Boys", traveled by boat to Whitehall Pond and then made their way up the Allegheny River. They arrived at Independence Hall in Philadelphia on July 15 and were arrested for treason.
