Somerville, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–UMD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1764 by English colonists as part of the Bergen township. The name "Somerville" is derived from William Somer's land grant in 1765 to John Dickinson and others. The first post office was established in 1776, and the first store opened in 1779. In 1824, Somerville became part of the newly created Newark Township. In 1881, Somerville incorporated as a town and annexed parts of neighboring Hackensack Township. As a result of its incorporation, Somerville lost some taxes and other privileges that it had enjoyed within the earlier township formality. However, it regained these privileges when Hackensack Township incorporate as a separate municipality in 1907. Since its incorporation into a municipality, Somerville has made significant strides both economically and socially. In 2007-2008, for example, it received approximately $1 million from state economic development funds to help improve roads and infrastructure; this money has been used to create new businesses and refurbish existing ones throughout the community since then. Additionally (and importantly), Somerville has worked hard to become an open-air community where residents can get involved with their local government through elected officials and civic organizations - something which has helped make it an attractive place to live for many people who live near Paramus or Paterson Junction NJ Transit stations west of town center

Somerville is a small town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,769 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Hudson metropolitan area. Somerville was first settled in 1740 by English colonists and became a town in 1834. The region now comprising Somerville and its adjacent townships was originally part of the Middlesex County borough of Perth Amboy. On July 1, 1860, Perth Amboy was merged into Middlesex County and Somerville became a section within that county. The first settler in what would become Somerville was Nicholas Fenton who arrived there on October 15, 1740 from Roxbury Township, Massachusetts as part of the Mayflower Compact with other passengers and crew of the "Mayflower." The land where Somerville stands today were purchased by Peter Minnis from John Wise on November 2, 1741 for $5 per acre (1/4 share). In 1834, New Jersey started to incorporate municipalities; Accordingly, both Perth Amboy and Middlesex Borough were incorporated into Somerville. On February 14, 1854, when Mechanicsburg township changed hands from Burlington to Morris County due to an election victory of Andrew Johnson over James Buchanan by 527 votes out of 1,,000 cast – one third more than necessary – Mechanic'sburg residents voted to join Somerville instead because they felt their township had been left behind in terms of development opportunities since it separated from Burlington. In addition to being part of Morristown borough until 1898 when that borough also joined Morris County (but retained its own name), Somerville also served as a component community within Newark city limits for many years until it ceased to do so upon the opening of Interstate 95 in 1998 which cut off most access to Newark eastward. After decades as an unofficial but supplemental community within Newark’s borders - primarily inhabited by people who worked or lived near the city limits but did not have enough resident status or political power to take control fully - this connection between SOMERVILLE AND NEWARK ended on January 1st 2013 when all non-residential buildings inside City Limits were demolished pursuant to NJDU Executive Order 13764 §2(a) following recommendations made by NJDEP’s Municipal Planning Commission during their hearing on December 8th 2012 held at Rutgers University’s brownfield site located across Route 89 from City Limits
Somerville is a village in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown-Easton, Pennsylvania-based commuting area. The first settlers in what is now Somerville were French Protestants who arrived in 1686. They named their community "Auvergne" after the town of Auvergne in central France. A post office was established here in 1814, and the name changed to Somerville two years later. In 1834, John Rutherfurd donated land to make a town square and laid out streets that run east-west. The first store opened here on Thursday nights from 1835 to 1840. In 1860, Anthony Jannone built a house on Main Street for himself and his wife; it still stands today as one of Somerville's most popular icons (it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places). In 1870, three men started a flour mill on Turner Street; it continued operation until 1935 when it was replaced by an automated flour mill operated by Pillsbury Company (now Unilever). In 1886, Thomas Edison bought shares in the American Telephone & Telegraph Company and became its president; he helped found Somerville as well as West Orange and Paterson NJ. Edison also gave money to build a library here which served as the nucleus for both our current City Hall building (Rutherford Library) and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School (now Stonington High School).
