The largest employer in Somerville is the Somerville Township government which employs over 100 people. The history of holster design and manufacture begins with European settlers arriving in this area in the early 1600s. Dutch and English traders brought pistols to North America with them for trade. In 1670, Lieutenant Colonel George Washington's forces encountered Native Americans in what is now Somerville Township. One of Washington's Indian scouts killed five warriors wearing holsters made from animal skin around his waistband and this inspired American officers to develop handguns as well. The first pistol designed specifically for self-defense was the Colt Model 1851 revolver which was patented on May 21st 1851 by Eli Whitney Jr.. holster manufacturers soon began making pistols that could be worn across the chest or back because these were popularly perceived as lessthreatening weapons than swords or rifles. The first Europeans to visit what is now Somerset were Dutch traders and missionaries in 1608 who named it "New Netherland". The name was changed to Somerville after the death of a wealthy Englishman by the name of Samuel de Somerville in 1702. In 1847, Somerville became an incorporated town when it split from Newark Township. The commercial center of Somersett lies on Route 209 within its borders and is home to the former Somersetti Paper Company which made paper products such as envelopes and ballots for local elections until 1984. According to the 2010 Census, there are several churches in Somersett including First Methodist Church (15th Street and Rte. 209), Stations Baptist Church (Broadway & Rte 209), Our Savior Lutheran Church (Route 9/10 & Pkwy 210), as well as two small businesses - Bedminster-based Midas Auto Glass and Allentown-based PAWS pet food store - that together have about 350 employees.
