The name "Somerville" comes from English settlers who named it for Samuel Morehouse (1688-1762), an early settler in what is now Somerville Township. The first village site was near present-day Union Street and Market Road in 1780. A post office called Morehouseville was established in 1781, but no evidence remains of this village. In 1802, two small villages were consolidated into one: Morehouseville and Southwick. This consolidation created a new township with a population of just over 7 hundred people – more than any other township in New Jersey at that time. At that time, there were no schools or churches within Somerville Township limits; residents taught their children themselves until after school hours when newspapers came into use for education purposes (until 1870). In 1868, when Somerville Borough became an independent municipality following merger with neighboring Rahway Municipality, it designated its own business district known as Southwick Business District No 2 which included much of today's north side of Main Street between Washington Avenue and Maple Avenue (the current boundaries of Somerville Borough). During World War II, many homes were built on land donated by local citizens for military barracks or storage during hostilities – such as those now occupied by US Naval Station Easton/Wrightstown and US Marine Corps Base Quantico - all located within modern-day Somerville borders. Today's downtown area contains several businesses including several banks along Main Street; shopping centers including Burlington Coat Factory on Maple Avenue between Washington Ave./Broadwalk Road and Park Place Boulevard; restaurants such as Subway on Washington Ave./Broadwalk Road between Elmira Rd./Newark Turnpike exit 5A and Clinton St.; plus several large high rises housing government offices like the Federal Reserve Bank Building on Constitution Square opposite Madison Square Garden - completed in 2009 - making it one of America's most Financial Districts! Additionally there are numerous smaller businesses scattered throughout streetside neighborhoods like Market Street/Washington Ave., Elmira Rd./Newark Turnpike exit 5A/Clinton St., Summit Blvd/Washington Ave., Grove City Blvd/Washington Ave., etc.. Notable people from Somerville include: congressman James Sensenbrenner (1905-1992) who represented northeastern Pennsylvania’s 3rd congressional district from 1967 until his death; Mayor Joseph Papp Jr.-served from 1955 until his resignation effective December 26th 1954; Representative Donald Payne (1973-2006) who represented portions of Bergen County east of Saddleback Valley before being elected to represent New Jersey’s 11th congressional district during the 2006 general election cycle; actor Douglas Adams who wrote science fiction stories set around his home planet Mervyn LeRoy while living at 10 Downing Street house during various periods throughout his life; former mayor Joseph Papp Jr.-served 1945-1959; actress Valerie Harper formerly known as Donna Reed
The first European to arrive in the area was Nicholas of Somerville, a Dutchman who landed on Long Island in 1624. The first permanent English settlement was made by Captain John Smith in 1703, and the town of Somerville was founded in 1710. The town's name is derived from the ancient Indian word soma (सोमा), meaning "honey."
