The name Somerville may come from the Dutch word "sommeren" meaning summertime. The first settler in what is now Somerville was Nicholas de Somerville who arrived in 1664. The town was founded by John Pemberton and others on April 14, 1793 as a result of the duel between Captain George Washington and Colonel Jonathan Putnam which took place near present-day Somerville. The Village of Somerville was incorporated on November 12, 1853. It became an unincorporated community on February 26, 1909 when it merged with Garden City to form the Township of Garden City-Somerville. On March 15, 1949 it became a Borough when Garden City removed its borough status. On January 1, 1973 it became a village again when it merged with West Orange to form the Town of West Orange-Somerville. As of the 2010 Census there were 7,811 people living in Somerville Township including 3237 households and 9451 families residing inside the village limits only while 8579 persons lived within its borders as part of township government only or as part of both village and township governmentcombining total population for both villages/townships= 7301

Somerville is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Newark–Atlantic City metropolitan area. The town was founded by Puritans in 1718 and was incorporated as a borough on April 19, 1834. As of the 2010 Census, Somerville's population ranked sixth in Hunterdon County with 7,868 residents. The history of Somerville goes back to Mayflower pilgrims who set out from Plymouth Colony on July 16, 1620 for what would become Somerville Township. The original settlers were not farmers but mechanics who located their business near what is now Union Bridge Road and Route 9 South because there was no water available for farming beyond the boundaries of present-day Somerville Township. They named their community "Somerset" after King George II of England who had granted them land in that area following his victory over Dutch forces at Yorktown in 1714. When English colonists arrived in America they brought with them many religious beliefs which influenced how they thought about life and governance - including Christianity - so when they discovered that another group were living without any form of government or law they offered assistance to these new arrivals and eventually made themselves an organized society based upon this belief system known as Congregationalism which began to take hold among some of the early settlers here. In 1778 two brothers by the name of Higginson purchased 4 acres (1 km²) adjoining present-day Somerville Avenue from John Turner for $200--the first purchase made within what became today’s Town limits." In 1833, local merchant John Purdy combined several small towns into one entity under the name Borough of Ridgefield before its merger into Hunterdon County on January 1st, 1834 This act facilitated commerce between rural areas within Middlesex County while also providing a more centralized governing structure for all township residents including those living southward on both branches of Route 9 (now called Routes 10/9). At its peak during this time period there were 11 businesses operating within Borough Limits including 3 banks – 2 tanneries and 1 grocery store – 5 carpenters – 3 shoemakers – 1 printer – 2 blacksmiths/forge owners/ Architects etc... There are numerous contributing factors to Borough growth such as increased population due to successive waves migration from Europe (especially Ireland), agricultural products becoming more accessible due to development along Interstate 95 corridor westward; throughout each taxable year increasing sales tax rate levied against goods exported from our township; free public transportation service provided by county authorities through horse buses running along Routes 9 & 10; increase in real estate values resulting from booming industrial production around Trenton & Atlantic City beaches making it easier for people seeking affordable housing options; various types tax breaks enjoyed by select groups like clergymen and teachers thereby encouraging home ownership)."
