The town was founded by English colonists in 1798 and named for Samuel Seward, an early settler. Additionally according to HUD’s “ Affluent Neighborhood Profile” for New Jersey City – Mercer County which was released in November 2009 – Somerville ranks first out of all municipalities within Mercer County for having high levels of affluence or wealth relative to median incomes

Somerville is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the nearby Somerville Heights neighborhood. The first European settlers in what is now Somerville were Dutch traders and farmers who arrived during the 16th century. They built a small village on the banks of the river Hackensack on what is now Livingston Street. In 1714, English colonists moved into present-day Somerville after defeating French forces at Bushey Park in what is today Union Township. The first use of the name "Somerville" was as part of a land grant to John Woolridge by General George Washington in 1764. Woolridge's heirs sold portions of this township to other families until 1836 when it became part of Middlesex County. During World War II, Somerville served as an Italian military garrison on Paramus Avenue in Carteret Borough which housed units of the 144th Infantry Division until 1945 and then again from 1951-1955 as part of Third Army's Zone of Interior command known as "Hollywood". In 1951, when Middlesex County formed its own government under the new county Constitution, Somerville became one of its initial municipalities within that new government. It remained so through reapportionment following New Jersey's 1959 federalignment and until 1984 when it became a borough within Middlesex County proper as part of an increase in population growth throughout southern New Jersey resulting from suburban development around Newark Liberty International Airport (then called Clark Field). In 1984, though still considered within Middlesex County proper by law, Somerville voted to become an incorporated municipality with full powers to provide for itself including passage of ordinances authorizing annexation by neighboring townships – both because its residents desired this level of autonomy and because they felt their community had been neglected by county officials since becoming a borough. This referendum resulted in incorporation into Orange Township on April 1st 1984; however, due to Horace Greeley’s efforts to create “boroughs only” districts across all New Jersey counties instead of allowing municipalities more latitude with respect to zoning (a policy which Greeley later abandoned), Somerville has maintained some degree de facto autonomy even while living inside Orange Township limits ever since. Today there are two main areas that make up Somervilles: The original Village area along Hackensack River where most people lived before moving out onto Route 77 towards Princeton or East Brunswick; and newer developments such as Pleasant Valley just outside Parsippany Junction complete with drive-through shopping malls/resorts/spas etc., many built using land donated or leased from previous homeowners who no longer live there but continue to influence local politics and culture through their descendants
Somerville was founded in 1691 by English settlers. The town grew rapidly, and by 1815 it had a population of over 4,000 people. The first post office was established in 1795, and the first school was built in 1827. Somerville quickly became a popular place to live and work, and its citizens were known for their patriotism, civic responsibility, and strong support of the American Revolution. In 1869 the town incorporated as a city, and its institutions—the police department, fire department, library system—were greatly expanded. Somerville remains an important center for economic development and educational innovation throughout New Jersey.
