Somerville, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Its name comes from the Latin word "somnus," meaning "sleep." The main thoroughfare in Somerville is Orange Avenue which runs east-west and has several shopping malls within its boundaries as well as art galleries and other professional businesses. The first settlement in what is now Somerville was established by Dutch settlers in 1664. In 1701, Samuel de Champlain founded Saint John's Parish on the site of present-day Somerville. The village of West Newton was merger with Somerville on April 15, 1839; it became a borough on February 3rd of that year. On October 25th, 1860, Somerville became a township when it absorbed East Newton Township and West Newton Township (the latter had been merged with Newton). On November 6th of that year, East Newton Township withdrew from township status and became an independent village called Southwick which retains its own government today under Borough form of government In 1881, sections 2 (north) and 4 (south) of Bedminster Township were annexed to Somerville following the consolidation of Essex County into New Jersey. On December 10th 1922 – just days after World War I ended – portions 1 (east), 3 (north), 5 (south), 7 (west), 8 (south), 9 & 10 along Orange Avenue were combined forming what are today known as Harrison Park Boulevard suburban section located betweenbound lanes one block south of Harrison Parkway expansion project/I-495 exit ramp off I-495 interchange - this area served as Athletes Village for Eastern Suburban High School athletes who practiced there until 1992 when they moved to Edison Township Brick Community college opened there in September 1994 renamed Livingston college since then Livingston University open also offers undergraduate degree programs at locations including Rutgers University Camden Campus Ridgewood Center for Nursing home services near campus Now SOMVERVILLE HOSPITALITY COOPERATIVE LLC

The town's rich history can be seen in its architecture and businesses dating back to before its incorporation as a borough in 1874 – some of which remain standing today including the Town Hall (1875), Masonic Temple (1876), Bank of America building (1911), Presbyterian Church (1877) and First National Bank building (1912). Additionally, Somerville has been home to several notable political figures over the years including Mayor John Coughlin who served from 1949 until his retirement in 1978; Assemblyman Leonard Lance who represented portions of Essex County from 2006 until he was defeated by Bob Menendez in 2013; former Governor Christie Whitman who announced her candidacy for president on September 16th, 2015; U.S Attorney General Loretta Lynch who made her election night speech within blocks of where she lives in Edison Township; photographers Garry Winograd and Eliot Spitzer; journalist Glenn Greenwald; author Karthryn Stockett; restaurateur Danny DeVito and entrepreneur Elon Musk both born there. Today's economy is supported by manufacturing plants that produce everything from tires to air conditioners to paper products such as postcards and checks. There are also several hundred small businesses located throughout the town that provide employment opportunities for residents."
Somerville was founded by Increase Mather in 1695. The settlement grew rapidly and by 1720, there were over 100 people living in the town. In 1776, the town was destroyed during a skirmish with Patriot forces. The population of Somerville dwindled after this event and it never regained its former glory.
