Somerville, NJ is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,028 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Somerville was first settled by Dutch and Swedes in 1664 and 1675. The first English settlers arrived in 1714. In 1812, the village of Newtown was split off from Somerville and incorporated as a separate town. In 1834, Somerville became part of Vineland Township. In 1885, Somerville became an unincorporated community when it merged with Hackensack to form the larger township of Hackensack-Somerville. On July 1, 1911, portions of Hackensack-Somerville (along with Ramsey Township) were added to Union County; this made Somerville one of the three townships within Union County along with Paterson and Teaneck. On December 13th 1920 parts of Garden State Parkway (now Route 35) were routed through Somerville between its eastern border with Essex County and its western border with Union County making it one of two places in New Jersey where Route 35 intersects Interstate 95 (the other being Princeton). On April 20th 1951, portions of Verona Township were annexed into Somerville; on October 15th 1976 most of what remains outside the city limits including Ridgewood Avenue was annexed into Somerville as well giving rise to its current name which may also be derived from "Somerling" - meaning both "家" or "home", as well as "立地" which means "land plot". It should be noted that there have been various changes to the name since then such as changing it back to Ridgewood Avenue following a referendum held on November 3rd 2018 which removed all but 10% of annexation requests for streets located inside city limits within Simpkins Park - including most notably Ridgewood Avenue - reverting back to their original names once they had been accepted by city planners. Prior to becoming known as either Ridgewood Avenue or SOMERLEY residents frequently used different terms for their street addresses: HACKENSACK ROAD – This refers specifically to 1st avenue east from river bank crossing which runs parallel to river until reaching SOMERSHAM RD then turns southeast continuing past SUSANNETOWN RD before veering away northeast towards HARBORVIEW DRIVE – this road continues past HARBORVIEW DRIVE CROSSING just after turning northwest off HARBORVIEW DRIVE into FARMINGTON AVENUE before turning again northeast onto Richards RD near former PEARLSTONE GARDENS Some residents still referto these streets using their original names although some have changed them over time: HACKENSACK AVE – This refers specifically to Richards Road east from juncture with RIVERBANK ROAD until reachING FRANKLIN AVENUE then turning southeast continuing past GREENWOOD AVE before terminating at RIVERBANK ROAD SOMERSHAM RD – This refers specifically to 6TH avenue north from junction with WASHINGTON STREET until reaching SUMNER RD then turning northwest continuing past SUSANNETOWN RD before terminating at SUMNER RD VERONA TRUCK STOP – This refers generally speaking To Irvington Ave southbound between US 1 & 2 exit #3 & 4. Somerville is a borough in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,722 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Somerville comes from an 8th century document known as the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle which mentions a community called "Soma" located on the Hackensack River near modern-day Somerville and South Amboy. The name may come from Old English somaǣ (snow) and lūmbe (settlement). In 1682, Samuel Purchas wrote about "A Monastery now standing in America" that he visited while traveling through New Jersey and North America. He noted that "In this Province there are several places where they build a monastic precinct, called Monasteries: one is in Somerville Township." According to the United States Census Bureau, Somerville had 11,722 residents at the 2010 census; however, this figure may be inflated because it does not include any contributing villages or hamlets within its boundaries. As of 2000, there were 10,916 people living in households and 602 families residing in non-institutionalized group quarters such as prisons and jails. There were also 2 military installations within town limits: Naval Air Station Patuxent River and Marine Corps Base Quantico (both closed down after 2009). The first school opened in 1876 for students attending township schools. Township School District No 5 operated until 1961 when it merged into the new Carteret Union School District No 1 which covers much of southeastern Essex County including Somerville Township proper as well as most of Bedminster Township to the north and Westwood Heights to the south. After being operative for 50 years uninterrupted by another school district it merged with Carteret Union School District No 3 on May 14th 2002 making Somerville one school district covering all of southeastern Essex County plus most of Bedminster Township to the north and Westwood Heights to the south since Carteret Union never had enough property left over to absorb both districts completely; unification freed up $1 million per year in state grants which then went into expanding education options throughout our townships including sports fields/ rec centers/ playgrounds/high schools/ college campuses inside & outside our borders instead of just funneling money back into our already overcrowded township divisions only providing services we could afford ourselves like high speed internet service & new parking garages... Allowing us to become more economically self reliant rather than rely solely on township government for services we cannot provide without breaking taxpayers’ hearts! According to Borough President John Wisniewski “the goal has always been consolidation so that one entity would have all authority over everything from building permits through zoning regulations – essentially giving them total control over every aspect of life hereabouts” according to Wisniewski during his time leading SOMERVILLE BOROUGH COUNCIL Meetings held every other month during his office hours he has heard concerns about what will happen if cartegeunion ever leaves SOMERVILLE FOR ANY REASON OTHER THAN TO SAVE THE COMMUNITY FROM INCREASINGLY HIGH COSTS OF BUSINESS OPERATIONS THAT WOULD BE CAUSED BY CONVERGING WITH ANOTHER SCHOOL DISTRICT? HAS ANYONE IDEA WHAT TYPE OF PLAN THEY WILL PRESENT TO THE BOARD IF CARTEGEUNION LEAVES? HAS SOMERVILLE BOROUGH COUNCIL EVER CONSIDERED MAKING A SUIT AGAINST THEIR OWN GOVERNMENT FOR NOT KEEPING THEM CROSSED OVER WHEN IT APPEARS LIKE THEIR ONLY CHOICE? IS THERE ANY WAY TO AVOID THIS POSSIBILITY? According to data compiled by NJ Advance Media between 2005-2009 Camden's combined business taxes jumped by 146%, Middlesex' business taxes rose by 133%& Passaic's increase was 139%. Atlantic City's combined taxes increased by 184%. Each municipality raised their rates an average amount greater than those found herein but East Brunswick saw their tax rates decrease while Hasbrouck Hills saw their rate increase slightly
