In 1768, Mather donated land for a new courthouse and jail which still stands today on Market Street near where Park Row now stands. The town became a municipality on March 8, 1834. Somerville was once a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It is now a part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Area and its population was estimated at over 120,000 in 2010. The name Somerville comes from the Dutch word "sommeren," meaning summertime. The first settlers in the area were Dutch people who arrived around 1620. The town was incorporated as a village on April 14, 1834, and became a city on December 13, 1911. The early residents of Somerville were farmers and their families who raised chickens, cows, pigs, horses and wheat until 1837 when large railroads came through the area and began to bring passengers and goods to markets in Philadelphia and New York City. This changed the economy of Somerville forever as it no longer had access to these markets. The original downtown core of Somerville consisted of only four houses which are still standing today. It soon became apparent that larger towns needed more space so they built up around them until Somerville had an acreage of land for every resident by 1870.
