Somerville is located on the southern edge of the New York City metropolitan area and is bordered by East Brunswick Township to the north, Haddon Heights Township to the east, Allaire Borough to the south, and Rahway Township to the west. The first white settlers in present-day Somerville were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1664. They named their town "Haghtaen", after their home island of Holland. The town was first settled primarily by Germans who arrived during World War II as part ofOperation Paperclip. For many years it was one of two towns in Middlesex County with a German majority (the other being Glassboro). In 1978, Somerville became an independent municipality; since then it has had its own government and police force. According to the United States Census Bureau, Somerville has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 4,059 people,[11] 3,865 households,[12] 1,824 families[13] and 914 housing units.[14] The population density was 2,542 people per square mile (1,031/km²). There were 498 housing units at an average density of 1,251/sq mi (500/km²). The racial makeup of Somerville was 98% White alone,[15][16][17][18] black or African American only 0%, Native American only 1%, Asian only 0%

The town of Somerville, New Jersey was founded by the Dutch in 1664. It was named for the Somerville family of traders who had moved there from Amsterdam in 1653. The first settlers were a group of men and boys led by Hendrik de Vries. They arrived on horseback and started to clear land which they named "Hendrik's Land." The settlement grew quickly, and within a few years, there were 11 families living in Somerville. In 1668, the village of Somerville was granted a charter by the Province of New Netherland. It consisted of a total area of only 4 square miles and had no representation in government. Somerville experienced some tough times during its early years. For example, in 1672, an epidemic swept through the town and killed many people. However, thanks to the efforts of local officials such as Abraham De Grave and Christiaan Hendrickson, Somerville bounced back relatively quickly. In fact, within 5 years (1672-76), the population had increased to 50 residents! One important development that occurred during this time was the construction of a road system connecting different parts of New Netherland. This road system helped create social disharmony among various communities because it made it easier for goods and people to move around without having to go through dangerous areas or risk being robbed or attacked. This highway also opened up new opportunities for trade and commerce which helped grow Somerville’s economy significantly over the next several decades. In 1701, after much debate among his fellow colonists regarding taxation reforms proposed by Sir William Samuel Johnson Sr., Governor James Fletcher issued a proclamation granting licensees (individuals with special rights under English law) permission to build mills on “New Sweden” – now called Staten Island – subject to certain restrictions including that no Indian corn be grown there! This event is generally considered to be when Staten Island became part of New Jersey; however at least one source claims that this entitlement did not actually take effect until 1714! During these difficult times, many refugees/immigrants began arriving in search of economic opportunity and stability; some settling permanently while others temporarily relocated until their permanent homes could be built or acquired. Some key figures during this time include Johannes de la Rue who oversaw construction projects on Long Branch Creek; John Woolridge who became acting Mayor following death of Mayor Cornelius Van der Velde; plus other entrepreneurs such as Nicholas Mynyk who developedigs successful tannery on Union Street near today’s Route 9th Street). These immigrants brought their skills and experiences with them which helped define what later came to be known as “Somervilles” culture - characterized by hard work ethic coupled with strong community ties throughout their lives both here at home & abroad (eGroups like The American Revolution Committee & Sons Of Liberty]).
