Somerville is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 18,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The oldest settlement in Somerville was founded by Dutch colonists in 1634. The community was named for the town of Amersham in Buckinghamshire, England. In 1792, the community received land from Sir Ralph Waldo Emerson and other investors through a subdivision sale program undertaken by Governor George Clinton. The first white settlers arrived in 1802 and soon began to build homes on what is now Jericho Road and Main Street. In 1813, the first public school was opened to educate children of residents of Somerville and nearby villages including East Brunswick (now Livingston), Clinton Township (now Union Township), West Caldwell (now Milford) and Easton (now Allendale). A grocery store also opened around this time to provide goods for local farmers and their families. The construction of the Erie Canal led to an increase in traffic along Jericho Road which made it difficult for farmers to transport their products upstream to market; accordingly, some began moving away from Somerville during this time period. By 1840, only a few houses remained in the original village center with most residents living near either the canal or rural roads leading out into neighboring townships or counties. However, during World War II Somerville became an important defensive stop on the Motorist Highway as supply dumps were built there near South Orange and Lindenwald Heights parks overlooking Interstate 95/US-2 between Somerville/Newark Airport exits 2A and 2B; these dumps remain extant today as part of Route 9 southbound between I-95 exit #8 & exit #9A outside Newark Airport.) After hostilities ended, many veterans moved back into Somerville while others established new communities elsewhere within Essex County due to limited resources or postwar economic opportunities within New Jersey itself%. As more people arrived over time in search of jobs throughout central New Jersey following World War II: industry started booming with manufacturing becoming dominant early on such that warehouses were built downtown; further development took place around shopping districts such as Elizabethtown Boulevard & Park Avenue SE; however retail vacancy rates spiraled thereafter until finally gentrification has reversed much recent loss since late 2000s when many shops closed due mainly to lack of demand from millennials who prefer city life features like bike lanes etc.; older elements have slowly been sold off piecemeal over years with no one really taking ownership until recently because zoning laws prevent large redevelopment projects without special consideration given generally towards character preservation instead which usually results in high prices paid + lengthy planning times). Overall though SOMERVILLE retains its small town feel despite all current exterior changes.- From 2016 -present there has been a wide focus on redeveloping parts of Back Bay waterfront area adjacent Riverfront Plaza where several large housing developments are planned., but environmental review process has yet to begin

Somerville, NJ was founded in 1795 by Captain John Smith. The township was named for Colonel Samuel Gardner, who served as the first Selectman of Somerville Township. The first home in the township was built on the corner of Main and Asylum Streets. In 1801, Captain John Smith's son-in-law, Nicholas Myatt purchased a tract of land lying north of Somerville Township and laid out what is now Myatt Park. The park features a large pond that is still used for fishing today. In 1824, Captain John Smith's grandson, Jonathan Smith, donated land to form part of Somerville Township which became one of New Jersey's four original townships. By 1829, there were over 1,000 residents living in Somerville Township. In 1881, following the creation of Camden County, Somerville Township seceded from Camden County and became part of Monmouth County. On July 1st, 1984, Monmouth County merged with Atlantic City into new Jersey City area and somerville township lost its status as a borough within Monmouth County but continues to be considered an agricultural town withinNJ city limits

The first inhabitants of Somerville were farmers who grew corn and wheat. In 1825, the village of Somerville became a Township. In 1892, the township became a Borough. In 1951, the borough became a city.
