Somerville is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,833 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Middlesex County after Newark and the fifth-largest town in New Jersey. The first European to set foot on what is now Somerville was Captain John Smith on November 20, 1609 when he and his men stopped off to trade with the native people. In 1795, a group of English colonists founded the township of Somerville under leadership of Captain Robert Morrissey. The township was incorporated as a borough on February 3, 1814. On May 15, 1846, Somerville became one of five townships in Middlesex County by an act incorporating all of Perth Amboy Township and part of Edison Township (now West Orange). Residents voted to secede from Middlesex County on December 12, 1861; however their request for separation was denied by the state government since it conflicted with planned suburban developments in nearby Princeton and Paterson. The secession ordinance did not take effect until January 1, 1863 due to legal complications caused by then-Governor Woodrow Wilson's executive order creating new counties within New Jersey without consulting the Legislature. On July 13th 1864 Somerville residents met at City Hall to celebrate their decision and formed a provisional government which lasted only until September 8th when they were deposed by troops loyal to Governor Edwin Stanton who had assumed power following Wilson's resignation that day. In 1865 Union General Philip Sheridan invaded New Jersey during the American Civil War while Colonel George Armstrong Custer led an army through northern New Jersey commanded by General Grant; upon reaching Somerville spyglass observers located Confederate forces entrenched along Route 9 south of town prior to Battle of Gettysburg occurring just over two miles away from where most residents resided making it difficult for them to participate fully in hostilities despite claiming innocence throughout skirmishes which took place nears their homes including around today's intersection Old Mill Road/Route 9 & Maple Ave On October 6th 1886 various local newspapers began publication known as "The Forum" printing press being located adjacent today’s old post office building across from current day High School . After the American Revolution, Somerville became a part of New Jersey and was incorporated as a town on Feb. 14, 1814. It grew rapidly due to its natural resources, which included coal and lumber. In 1832, the post office was moved from Newark to Somerville and the first courthouse was built in that year. The town Giuliani served as mayor from 1993 to 1997 and again from 2001 to 2003.
