Somerville, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 18,908 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Middlesex County and the fifth-most populous city in New Jersey. Somerville is located on the southern border of Middlesex County and its namesake village on Haddonfield Lake. The first settlement in what would become Somerville was made up of farmers who founded a small farmstead called "Haven" about 1795 on present-day Spring Street. The name may have been inspired by Havens Creek which flowed through their land. A second group of pioneers arrived from Passaic Valley around 1800 and named their new town after Isaac Newton's birthplace, Woolwich, England – now part of London – but they abandoned it due to bad water conditions and lack of farmland nearby. In 1814, several brothers built a ferryboat service between Somerville Ferry Landing on Haddonfield Lake and Bordentown as an agricultural transportation hub for local farmers transporting goods downriver to Bordentown or Philadelphiaport during market seasons; this ferry service remained in operation until 1921 when it was replaced by a highway bridge across Haddonfield Lake that crossed over into Bordentown). In 1835, John Stephenson bought 200 acres (0.80 km²) of property along the banks of the Delaware River opposite where Somerville now stands from Nicholas Demarest Jr., one of America's leading merchants during that time period. By 1880 there were more than 100 families living in various houses scattered throughout somervilles central business district (& Midtown & North Somerville)... These early settlers did not establish any permanent communities outside their own hamlet... With no natural resources available within commuting distance they gradually converted to agriculture... However until recently little attention has been paid to these historical neighborhoods which are still intact today!! Today many people visit these districts each day just Baltimor Square Shopping Center being its only commercial building aside from several churches etc., gives you an idea how much community spirit there still remains here!!! Somerville is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 27,532. The name "Somerville" is an anglicized form of "Borrego Springs". The first Europeans to visit what is now Somerville were French traders in 1624 and 1625. The town was founded by Puritans in 1735 as part of a survey for new land grants on the southern shore of Long Branch Bay. It was granted to John Carteret by George Washington in 1743. The first store opened in 1759 and the first school in 1770. The Township of Somerville was formed from portions of Middlesex County on April 14, 1814. On February 22nd, 1868, it became a borough. On December 6th, 1872, Somerville voted to become one of twelve municipalities that joined Newark City Council effective January 1st following the passage of municipal legislation by Governor Prentiss Morgan; this action made Somerville second oldest municipality still extant within Newark City limits after West Orange and before Hudson Valley City which merged with Essex County on November 3rd., 1895. On September 15th 1913 - just over 100 years after its incorporation - Borough President Wm Haddon announced at a meeting that Somerville would be moving from its original location on Main Street due to heavy development that had taken place since its incorporation making it difficult for residents to access transportation and shop adequate distances away from downtown Newark without abandoning their neighborhoods or searching for other forms of community living beyond what “the olden days” could offer them; this move came about because then Borough President Haddon felt thatCouncil members who resided closer to downtown than South Orange Avenue were being denied opportunities they should have been given because they could only travel there every other day while those located further north needed more than two hours travel time each day to reach their jobs Downtown It wasn't until 1990 when Borough President Jeffery Langer announced plans to build a new library across from Borough Hall which would make it easier for residents living near Center Square (now called Park Street) and south down Market Street (now Stillwell Avenue) access all aspects of city government including education and shopping not just directly but via bike or walking instead The construction started on July 25th 1990 with groundbreaking taking place atop Municipal Hall just east of center square where today's Parkside School stands . After two decades long effort spearheaded by Mayor Jeffery Langer & engineer Bruce Rubenstein – both former Deputy mayors under Mayor Coleman Young – the $50 million project finally reached completion on August 29th 2000 thanks largely to fundraising efforts led by local businesswoman Donna Brazile along with support from NJ Turnpike Authority Chairman Joseph Sarno .
