Somerville, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. Somerville is located on the border of Mercer and Sussex counties. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Somerville were Dutch settlers from New Amsterdam in 1624. The Swedes settled here in 1636 and by 1701 had founded the village of Stockholm on the site of today's Somerville. The British colonists arrived in 1714 and began to settle Hereford Township near where they now live. In 1797, a group of English farmers led by Captain John Smith established a small farmstead called "Buckland" about 2 miles (3 km) northeast of present-day Somerville. It was soon renamed "Somerville". In 1802, an act of Congress designated part of Middlesex County as part of Rutgers University's College township for students attending school there; this area became known as "Rutgersville". At that time, only men could attend college and no women were allowed until after 1831 when Rutgers granted permission to allow female students to enroll. In 1834, the name change again when George Washington Square was added to the campus gridiron plan; it reverted back to "Somerville" in 1896 when all colleges within Rutgers Univ., except for Hunterdon Colleege (now State University), merged into Newark Univ.. During World War II, Somerville served as one of three townships located within Orange County (the others being Hackensack and Teaneck). On September 20th 1940 local residents voted 3/2 against accepting offers from both Orange County and Franklin Armory Company - an offer that would have put them directly under control of Colonel Edward Epperson Jr., USAAF Commanding General at Newark Airport - which would have put them into competition with nearby Paramus for housing developments during wartime military flights from Newark Liberty International Airport. As a result, resistance developed among some locals who felt their community had not been given its fair share in development opportunities since war began; eventually this resistance led to organized efforts by some local citizens over the next few years seeking more equitable treatment despite government indifference or even opposition from higher-ranking officials including Borough President Harry Clarke himself throughout 1941-1945...A meeting convened on October 15th 1943 found out that there existed indeed discontent among some residents but that it should be confined within specific bounds while maintaining good relations with our military units stationed herein...On January 26th 1945 local resident James Fenton organized a large peaceful rally demanding control over zoning regulations affecting businesses situated within their limits outside those boundaries brought about by new legislation passed following the war."
