The Town of Somerville has been formed from parts of two other townships: Amboy Township (now West Amboy) and Bloomingdale Township (now East Bloomingdale). In 1870-71 when Amboy & Bloomingdale were consolidated into one township they also annexed part of what is now Park Ridge Township - this annexation led to the name change for that township as well; it reverted back to its original name in 1912 after Park Ridge proper merged with South Union Township into Camden County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town had a total area of , all land. However according to one source “the official boundaries” contain only about 5% of what actually exists within town limits due to restrictions placed on by developers/landowners/etc.; accordingly much less than 1/5th or even 1/10th or even fractional acreage really lies within these unofficial boundaries! nonetheless these boundary lines do form important historical landmarks for many residents especially since they are often used as reference points when planning their own streetscape or neighborhood development plans!
