Somerville is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 18,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton–Armonk, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Somerville" may come from the ancient Indian word for "settlement." The first Europeans to visit what is now Somerville were French traders and fur traders in 1714. In 1727, Samuel de Champlain visited and named it after François-Jacques somerville (1696-1753), an officer on a French expedition that explored the Canadian continent. In 1781, Englishman Benjamin Franklin came to America and founded Philadelphia with his family. He named one of his daughters Sarah after his mother's sister Sarah Ellicott (1800-1847). That same year, John Adams arrived in America and soon located what would become Somerville Township on July 8, 1781 as part of lieu des Noirs (i.e., White Township). On July 10th Adams granted land to future residents who had already fought for their country in the Revolutionary War including future Prime Minister George Washington and General James Wolfe during the Battle of Saratoga! In 1834, James Waring built Waring's Ford Dam on Lake Monmouth which created hydroelectric power; this waterpower greatly helped fuel American industry during the early days of automobiles! When Westinghouse Electric Company built its factory in 1867 across from today's University Hospital entrance on Market Street - this area became known as 'Attell Place' because many Elektricité de France workers lived there - electricity began flowing through Somerville Neck Road into Newark Penn Station! After World War II Somerville grew increasingly suburban as new housing developments were constructed adjoining Route 106 east of downtown. However some small businesses still thrived until the mid 1990s when advances in internet technology made information dissemination more accessible than ever before; these days Somerville has become an online city! Today Somerville features a vibrant downtown district with several restaurants/cafés/bars/stores & galleries along Market Street while also having several high-end home developments including: Bellevue Place which fronts onto Rutgers University's Paramus campus; Park Place which borders Rutgers University* ; Ridgefield Avenue runs along Iselin Avenue just south of Ridgefield Lake; & Northvale Drive connects Ridgefield Ave with Northvale Commons Shopping Center just north of Ridgefield Lake Regional High School

Somerville is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden City region. Somerville was settled by English settlers in 1714. The first settler, John Nicholson, founded a farm on what is now Main Street and Nicholson Avenue. In 1749, Samuel Armstrong came from Ireland to purchase land in present-day Somerville from the Dutch colony of New Netherland for $2 million. In 1807, the town of West Somerville was established within Somerville Township and became an independent municipality with its own government and police force. In 1881, it annexed part of East Somerville Township which made it two municipalities again with its own government and police force. The first school in what is now Somerville Township was built in 1714 on land that John Nicholson donated to the township trustees as a public school district. The first teacher was Master Nicholas who taught grades one through twelve years old until his death in 1727. After Master Nicholas’s death there were no teachers for eight years until Mr Philips (or Philip) who served from 1739-1749 taught grade thirteen students before moving up to teach high school level classes starting in November of that year according to promotional material published by the township trustees at that time. In 1800 three stores were opened along what are now Third Street (now Market Street), Fourth Street (now Washington Boulevard), and Fifth street each serving about thirty customers each at their respective locations behind their homes making this area one of largest commercial areas east of Philadelphia back then! On January 1st 1800 Abraham Weitzel opened a grocery store on Second St between 3rd & 4th Streets also serving about thirty customers each! This place would later become known as Weitzel’s or simply “the Grocery Store”! By 1810 there were six stores open including two groceries and some other merchandise such as clothing stores butchery/butterfly/frozen chicken markets etc!!! On July 15th 1813 Jameson Pugh bought two hundred acres (twenty-six hectares) northwest of Present-day Pompton Lakes for £600 sterling more than anyone else had offered! He named his new property “Pommontonedge” after himself! Pugh's original farmstead consisted only of seven or eight log cabin homes but he soon erected additional buildings including a large barn and fence around his estate which still stands today!" Thereafter Pugh started planting crops such as beans, peas, corn etc., grew trees for lumber purposes during winter months when fields were Un clearing so he could get have better transportationable soil for farming next spring" For many years following Jonathan Hughes deeded five hundred acres south side road leading northeast from highway 287 just west off Route 22 called "Hughes' Road" extending all the way to current day Pompton Lakes village creating another border between present day Somerville Borough NJ on one side bordersHughes Road community on both sides while also comprising parts of West Park Avenue development across river opposite riverfront home security services office complex apartments housing developments business park
