Somerville is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden– vide city Combined Statistical Area. The first settler in Somerville were two men who arrived on horseback from Connecticut in 1795. They named their land "New Homes" after they found a new home elsewhere on Long Island. By 1800, there were twenty families located in what is now Somerville. In 1812, the first school was constructed and by 1827 it had become a second-rank township under English law. In 1876, the Township of Somerville became a Borough within Morris County when Morristown was merged into the county. At that time, it consisted of just over one square mile (0.6 km²). The borough's borders varied through its history; it included parts of Central Park until 1915 and all but one block of Ridgewood until 1951 when it split off to form its own municipality again; however its center remained unchanged until annexed by Camden in 1955 as part of that city's growth and development during that period. As Morristown grew rapidly with many industrial plants built there during World War II, Somerville began to decline along with much of the rest of Morris County due to economic factors such as joblessness and commuting distances between somerville and other townships within Morris County which increased because railroads bypassedMorris County altogether during wartime while building through other counties instead (the exceptions being Rahway which became an independent town following World War II). However, over time some residents relocated back to Somerville while others established businesses within Morristown or outside of Somerville proper including several restaurants/bars/cafes/clubs around central Park before finally annexing by Camden in 1955 despite protests from some residents about this process (due to their belief that their neighborhoods would be lost forever should they annex!). Today, more than eighty years after incorporation into Camden – still considered an unincorporated community – most locals still refer to themselves simply as "Somersiders". While more businesses have moved away since then (most recently leaving for larger towns like Vineland and Paterson), SOMERSIDERS remain active local organizations serving primarily recreational purposes such as playing golf or going fishing throughout summer months; hosting cultural events such as concerts or potluck dinners each year during Christmas season; maintaining close ties with neighboring Central Park communities including Rahway and Carteretville which are also incorporated municipalities; and carrying on various traditions unique to their area like having annual Strawberry Festival on Memorial Day weekend - something which has continued uninterruptedly every year since its inception in 1916!

Somerville, New Jersey is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 14,599 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Somerville Township was Abraham de la Roche (1698-1764). He along with his son and grandson built a log cabin on the east side of what is now Roosevelt Road near present-day Weequahic Park. The town of Somerville was founded by Capt. Israel Putnam on December 5, 1784 as "Putnam's Ferry". In 1812 it became part of Middlesex County and incorporated as a town on February 15th, 1813 under the name "Somerville." On March 3rd, 1824 it changed its name to "Somerly" after Samuel Pomeroy who had been an early leader in the development of Burlington Township and later served as Mayor of Camden during that time period. In 1852, when Somerville Township was reincorporated within Middlesex County as a result of changes made in county organization following the American Civil War, it retained its original name and location - just across from Camden - although growth throughout these years led to increased municipal services being provided by individual townships rather than through one unified government. In 1881/82 Somerville joined forces with neighboring Mercer Borough to form what would become known as the Borough of Camden which then included both boroughs together with adjacent parts of Bucks County. Although this merger did not lead to any real increases in services or tax revenue for either borough due to their separate jurisdictional boundaries - Mercer eventually regained full independence from Camden upon formation of its own independent municipality in 1903 - it nonetheless represented a significant weighty change for both cities because together they constituted one large city entity for all residents regardless of residency inside or outside Camden proper! On July 1st 1960 Somerville Township merged into newly formed Gloucester Township; however this move did not have any significant consequences other than raising total township population size to around 16K people without reducing any current populated areas within Somerville itself (though some boundary adjustments were made subsequent thereto). As GloucesterTownship grew rapidly during the late 1990s and 2000s – primarily driven by suburban development – many residents began making calls for an outright annexation or consolidation into larger municipalities like West Deptford or Glassboro due to concerns about how much longer their township could continue effectively serving as its own entity while also accommodating growing populations within new buildings located directly next door on various arterial arteries like Roosevelt Roads and Market Streets respectively. And so on October 2nd 2008 – less than two years after joining GloucesterTownship – Somerville voters passed Resolution No 8-1 asking NJ TRANSIT regional director Kevin Donovan if he would consider annexing their township “to provide additional transportation options” should future rail projects bring more people into our community; ultimately Donovan agreed to consider such an annexation but noted that there are several factors he must take into consideration before making such a decision including infrastructure needs and zoning regulations compliance which would need formal review should such an annexation be approved by NJ TRANSIT board members
