Somers Point is a borough in New Jersey, United States. It was formed on February 14, 1874 from the merger of two other towns in Monmouth County: Somers and West Egg. The population was 12,853 at the 2010 census. The area that would become Somers Point was first settled by English colonists in the late 17th century. In 1684, Peter Stuyvesant's forces destroyed a Native American village at what is now known as West Egg beach after they invaded Long Island Sound and threatened to destroy all of New Netherland if they did not surrender. The site of today's Somers Point was part of the Dutch colony of Staten Island until 1726 when it merged with New York City. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of , all land. In 1874, an act was passed by the New Jersey Legislature which created Monmouth County and divided it into three districts (West Egg district including present-day Somers Point; East Brunswick district including present-day Edison; and Brick Township including present-day Neptune). The four towns in this new county were then each given an elected board of commissioners which had power to make ordinances governing public works and to raise money for local improvements. On February 14, 1874, these boards met at Somerset House in West Egg and adopted resolutions adopting declaration that their town became "a Borough within Monmouth County". This action allowed for annexation by other municipalities within Monmouth County without having to go through formal annexation proceedings as required by law. As early as 1892 there were plans to annex Somers Point because its location made it an attractive shipping center due to its longshoremen's union docks located just off State Route 202 adjacent to Sandy Hook Lakefront Park & Wildlife Preserve on Sandy Hook Bayou - making it one of only two places in NJ where you could buy property directly across from regulatory government agencies like state police barracks! Although initially opposed by some residents who saw this development as another gentrification effort spearheaded by developers interested in displacing traditional businesses/residential homeowners instead of creating vibrant communities around their properties - over time many people came around once they realized how great things could actually work out when done correctly! Today’s business climate is very different than when these plans first emerged – with more than 50% small businesses represented – but much remains similar such as excellent access to transportation options via both NJ Transit & PATH trains right next door while also being minutes away from world-class shopping destinations like Newark Liberty International Airport or Paramus Station! By 1800, there were about 250 residents living in what are now Somers Points including many farmers and fishermen along the then-northeastern coast of New Jersey In 1824, after years of effort by Commodore John Stevens (a son of Admiral Sir John Stevens), Englishman George Stephenson founded an oil rig on Long Beach Island which became known as "Stevenson's Rig" or simply "Rig". Many local businesses were established during this time including Winton’s Wharf where produce was imported from Europe and grocery store fronts that sold goods such as meat and eggs from above-the-water dockside stores. During World War II HMS Daring landed here to supply munitions dumps with coal dust used to make incendiary bombs
