Somers Point is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Somers Point has been inhabited by people since before European contact. The Dutch founded a trading post here in 1624 and developed this area as an agricultural center around 1710. Somers Point grew rapidly during World War II as a munitions production and storage community, but declined after the war ended. Today, Somers Point enjoys modest economic growth due to its location within walking distance of Newark Liberty International Airport and several major businesses including Prudential Financial Group and Essex County Transit Authority. There are many history of shooting target holders in Somers Point, NJ. Some of the earliest targets were set up by a group of Dutch immigrants in 1814. They used an old fort as their Shooting Ground and placed a large number of small targets on the fort's roof. The area now known as the "Fort Amsterdam" is where these early shooters met to shoot at small game. In 1834, Captain Jeremiah Haddon established a public shooting ground at the wharf on the Hudson River opposite Sandy Hook Point. From here, he allowed people from all over New Jersey to come and shoot at target balls in his yard. It was here that Captain Haddon became well-known throughout the region for his great shooting skills. Over time, other captains followed suit and began setting up their own ranges across New Jersey; each captain had their own way of putting together a range that suited their needs and interests best. In 1876, Captain John Sibley opened what is now known as Somers Point Harbor Shooting Club on Northgate Avenue in Somers Point. This club quickly became one of the most popular shooting venues in town for civilians and military alike due to its wide open spaces and excellent facilities - including a water tower which could be used for firing practice! Somers Point is a town located in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 8,835. The name Somers Point originated with Nicholas Somers who settled there in 1723. In 1832, John A. MacMahon purchased some land at the mouth of the Hackensack River and founded what became known as Somers Point Naval Shipyard on it; this shipyard was later renamed to Mackay Shipyards after Commodore James H. Mackay who donated land for it in 1906. The town's economy is based primarily on manufacturing and shipbuilding activities which have declined in recent decades due to competition from other towns in New Jersey and abroad. Somers Point Township was established by Royal Charter on September 5, 1784 as part of Bergen County and remained an unincorporated township until its dissolution on January 1, 1911. On November 9, 1917, during World War I when British troops were invading America through New Jersey, General John Japp offered his services to the U.S. military and Lt.-Gen James Fenton accepted him into service as Chief of Staff for Army corps headquarters in Trenton under Gen France’s command; Japp then became Commanding Officer (CO) ofthe 2nd Infantry Division at camp Tilden near Rahway before taking command of II Corps atrocities area south of Philadelphia while French forces attacked American lines east of Princeton Junction The first school building was built in 1783 which still stands today along with a number of other historical buildings such as barracks for local militia troops and chapel built by Rev.(or Mrs.) George Washington Custis soon after his victory over Rochambeau at Saratoga Springs on October 12th,. Other important buildings that may be mentioned include: Court House (built 1801), Post Office (1812-1814), Dartmouth College Chapel (first built 1696), Navy Yard ( Built 1800 ), Supreme Court House (1784), Assembly Hall(1786-1800), Dockyard(Built 1800 ), White Sulphur Works( Built 1800 ). After independence from Great Britain all these structures were destroyed or moved away when America gained her own government In 1886 three companies - The Atlantic Refining Company No 3 & 4 Limited Concerned With Petroleum refine Petroleum products from Bituminous Coal mined near Suffern; Pennsylvania Coal interests concern With Lignite coal Mines Near Woodstown In 1902 two new oil refineries were opened - Exxon Corporation refinery followed by Mobil Oil Refinery both located downtown now just southwest corner Liberty Avenue across from old First National Bank building also used as a movie theater/Live music venue etc These days most industry activity takes place within or around Newark using areas like Lewes Port including container terminals handling goods coming into America via sea or air but small amounts are shipped out to points beyond especially Europe One significant development that took place during the 1990s involved a major redevelopment project called “The Gateway Project” involving construction of several thousand new homes inside and outside Of town center culminating with the opening of Target Plaza adjacent to Interstate 95 opposite train station

However, despite these setbacks, Somers Point continued to thrive in the postwar years as an important industrial center. In 1955, however, when New Jersey became an all-white state (a result of integration), black residents started moving into the town beginning in earnest. By 1990s standards, Somers point had become quite diverse with many different cultures living together side by side in one community. Today, Somers Point remains an important center for business and industry within New Jersey thanks to its location on the Hackensack River and its strong economic resurgence due to various new development projects underway including a new healthcare complex and high-rise apartments that are set to rise next door to Fenway Park!
