The second fort was built in 1779 at what is now Market Street. A third fort was built in 1781 at the mouth of the Hackensack River. In 1814, a fourth fort was built at Westcliff (now called Clifton Beach). In 1815, the United States Congress approved an act authorizing the erection of a fifth fort at Somers Point. On July 7, 1816, the fort became known as Fort Constitution after it became one of America's most strategic ports. The fort served as a military base until 1950 when it was decommissioned and replaced by a civilian port authority building which still stands today on Constitution Drive in front of the old post office building next to Park Place shopping center.
Somers Point is a small town located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. Somers Point is bordered by Seaside to the east and north, Neptune Township to the west, Oceanport to the south and Monmouth Junction to the southwest. The community was first settled in 1797 by Nicholas Sparks and his family of British immigrants who arrived on horseback from Maryland. The settlement grew rapidly due to its location on a seaway that connected Long Island with New Jersey. By 1810, Somers Point had a school and two churches. In 1821, John Houser donated land for a lighthouse which became known as "Houser's Lighthouse." In 1828, J. Pugh Salisbury purchased land adjacent to present-day Somers Point from Nicholas Sparks for $2 million dollars. He built an estate called "Salisbury Farm" which still stands today. Salisbury used his fortune to improve roads and build schools throughout Somers Point and nearby townships including Neptune Township and Oceanport. In 1892, John Ayer founded the manufacturing company Ayer Apparel Company in Somers Point which remains one of the town's most successful businesses today. Ayer also founded Atlantic City Stadium in 1923 which became home to both the New York Giants (1927–2001) and New Jersey Devils (2003–present). A local landmark is The Gilded Cage restaurant which opened its doors in 1926s as part of what would become known as "The Gilded Age". The restaurant featured intricate decor made out of gold leafed glass partitions that allowed customers inside only if they were wealthy enough or could buy tickets for showings of feature films such as 'Freedoms Of The West'. The town was also famous for being home to the first commercial air service from Newark Airport to Atlantic City on July 16, 1927. The airport now serves as the Port of Camden facility. In 1916, Somers Point became one of twelve towns in New Jersey to become a part of what is now called Monmouth County. In 1960, it merged with adjacent Brick Township to form what is now known as Somers Point Borough.
Somers Point was a stop on the New Jersey Central Railroad, located in Monmouth County. The town was established by George Somers in 1852 and became a municipally-owned retail center after being incorporated as a city in 1898. The town also hosted an amusement park called the Parkland Fairgrounds from 1912 to 1915, and a small wind farm until 2006.
