Somers Point is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,844 at the 2010 census. Somers Point is bordered by Neptune Township to the north, Atlantic City to the east and south, and Basking Ridge to the west. The township was formed on July 29, 1838 from portions of Neptune and Atlantic City townships. The original settlers were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1674 and named their community "Somerset". In 1797, British General George Washington visited Somers Point while on his way from Philadelphia to Morristown. Commodore John Stevens anchored his ship there while he made repairs on his flagship USS Constitution. The town became known as "Westerly" after landowner Nicholas Westervelt granted the area to its current residents in 1809. In 1814–15 during the War of 1812, American forces under Commodore John Ellis destroyed HMS Guerriere at Sandspit Cove just outside modern-day Somers Point. The British had built that structure for use as an artillery bombardment range; it still stands today but has been converted into a museum.). Thanksgiving Day 1914 saw one of history's most dramatic battles occur when both sides fought around mile long Beechy Harbor which lies between modern day Somers Point and Neptune Township across from what is now Middletown Naval Hospital (now called Bay Shore Medical Center). At least 8 Americans were killed along with over 50 American sailors lost including Commandant James Hickey aboard HMAS Melbourne who was later posthumously awarded a Medal of Honor for his actions that day

Somers Point was a small community in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. It is now part of the Trenton-Ewing borough of New Jersey. The population was 1,992 at the 2010 census. Somers Point was founded by English settlers in 1695 and reached its peak as a fishing and shipping village in the 18th century. However, it declined after the American Revolution and during the 19th century became an agricultural center with a large dairy business. Somers Point's decline led to its demotion to Third Class Township status in 1908, but it regained Second Class Township status following township reorganization in 1960. The town's history begins with English colonists who arrived in 1695 from Jamestown Colony. The original settlement was located on what is now called State Road 6 near what is now known as Market Street. In 1714, George Washington visited this area while on his way to battle British troops at Trenton Bridge and ordered Captain John Smith to establish a military post here for the protection of Monmouth County residents against Indian attacks. Smith built Fort Washington along present day State Road 6 between 1718 and 1722; this fort served as an early warning system for local residents about British troop movements in the area. In 1780, merchants from Elizabeth City foundedElizabethtown (later Elizabethtown Junction) on land that had been purchased by them from Native Americans near present day Bound Brook Township; these colonists established a ferry service between Elizabethtown Junction and Bound Brook Township which allowed goods brought overland from Elizabeth City to be unloaded at Bound Brook Township before being transported across Sumter Creek into Monmouth County via the Elizabethtown Ferry Service. The first school in Somers Point opened on October 15, 1785; it operated out of one of several buildings owned by Samuel Pinkney until he sold it to John Goodrich for $1 per acre in 1801). In 1802, Goodrich hired Lewis Morris as his teacher; Morris later became headmaster at nearby East Brunswick High School (now known as Weehawken High School). Goodrich died suddenly on November 2, 1802 and his estate was divided among his three sons: James Goodrich donated half of his holdings to Rutgers University while Robert Goodrich donated all remaining assets – including slaves – to Princeton University; James Goodrich also received an annuity from Rutgers University until his death in 1830. However, despiteJamesGoodrich's donation much remains unknown about Robert Goodrich's ownership thereof because no deeds or records exist documenting any transactions related thereto other than those published within Rutgers University Archives files dating back to circa 1840-1850 inclusive! A number of sources mention that James Goodrich may have been able to purchase some parcels surrounding modern day Somers Point through purchases made duringRobertGoodrichesthatwere'trecordedin anyoftheabovementioneddeeds/recordsuntilcraftersthan70yearsof hindsight! Notwithstanding this uncertainty still remains largely unanswered about Robert Goodrich's participation within Somers Point’s earliest days! Two centuries passed before another settler moved into what would become Somers Point proper: Isaac Norris bought 100 acres (40 ha) along present day State Road 9A just east of where today’s Depot Square stands on December 7, 1861 from John Pemberton for $5 per acre ($60 total purchase price). Norris named this tract “Norrisville” after himself and began development here including building houses which remain extant today down memory lane complete withOriginal Windows & Doors still extant inside! EventuallyNorrisvillewouldbecomeknownasSomersPointafterthecommunitywasdividedintoseveralsubdistrictsandrenamedaccordingtolocationofcurrentcongressional district!!!
