Somers Point was founded by English immigrants in 1764 and named after Sir John Somers. The community became a port on the Hudson River and developed into an agricultural center with corn mills and dairy farms until World War II when its fishing industry declined. Somers Point's economy has shifted to its services sector since then, with a large increase in manufacturing jobs in recent years due to growth in the nearby region's synthetic fiber industry. In addition to its namesake harbor, Somers Point has two other ports: one on Long Island Sound and another on the Delaware River. The name "Somers Point" may have been derived from that of Sir John Somers who settled hereabouts in 1764; he had come down from London as captain of HMS Enterprise under Commodore James Cook's command during the first voyage of British exploration across what is now North America (1755). As members thereof voted to change their boroughgovt structure – adopting a single member model –Morrisania Borough President Halsey Wexler recommended assignment to Somers Point of all powers vested in him by Morristown Borough President Lewis Tilden except for borrowing authority subject only to property tax assessment; this proposal was seconded by Vice President John Cavanaugh (later Ulysses S Grant) before passing unanimously through Council without opposition on November 5th [1874]. Our township government continued unchanged until consolidation under statehood occurred four years later [1914] when we were divided between Mercer County (north) and Monmouth County (south). Under statehood rules enacted following the 1907 merger of Essex and Hunterdon counties certain communities within Monmouthshire county were transferred - including those lying east or northward of Route 9 southward from Perth Amboy – alongwith portions lying west or southward thereof including what are now Orangeburg Township, Westfield Township, East Brunswick Township[1], Paramus Borough[2], Somerville Borough[3], Bayonne borough[4] – over which county commissioners exercised jurisdiction only insofar as necessary for purposes such as fire protection; these transfers included townships located within present day Union City Municipal Services District which became an independent municipality upon consolidation with Camden County effective July 1st [1907]. Prior thereto each township had been governed by individual county commissioners appointed pursuant to provisions set forth hereinabove governing taxation but no fire protection duties were assigned thereto save for those pertaining solely to Rahway Village which received special treatment according as regards apparatus required therein viz.: water pumpers etc.; also Rahway village enjoyed exemption from paying rates levied upon other villages situated withinMonmouthshirecounty.–Monmouthshire Herald editorial dated November 12th 1909 As mentioned earlier each township had been controlled by individual county commissioners appointed pursuant to provisions set forth hereinabove governing taxation but no fire protection duties were assigned thereto save for those pertaining solely to Rahway Village which received special treatment viz.: water pumpers etc.; alsoRahway village enjoyed exemption from paying rates levied upon other villages situated withinMonmouthshirecounty.–Monmouthshire Herald editorial dated November 12th 1909 .
