In 1814, much of what is now Somers Point were included within the newly formed separate municipality known as Ferry Landing because it had become apparent that there would be no more ferry connections between Middlesex County and New Jersey due to increased shipping costs associated with the warring states conflict(). Ferry Landing initially consisted of just a few homes but rapidly grew into a thriving community with over 100 residents In 1835, Somerset Place - later renamed Ferry Landing - became home to America's first steamboat landing when paddlewheelers arrived from Boston Harbor on June 9th aboard USS Constitution (1836). The area soon became known for its seafood offerings including oysters Rockefeller which are still sold fresh today at various locations in town Ferry Landing eventually merged with neighboring Bricktown in 1867 due to differences over zoning restrictions however it continued to thrive as an independentcommunity until 1972 when it amalgamated into nearby Somers point proper . In 1976, following annexation by Somers point proper , Bricktown became part of another new development called River Edge complex which continuesto this day remains one of Monmouth County's most popular neighborhoods . The harbor play area known as "The Frying Pan" was built here to improve water conditions for warships docking at the port. After the war, many new businesses were established in Somers Point including Jardine & Hoyt Inc., which is now one of America's leading shipping companies, and Spartan Graphics Inc., which manufactured precision printing products. Today, Somers Point is an important commercial center with several high-rise buildings and several thousand residents. It is also home to two large universities – Rutgers University and Monmouth University – as well as numerous professional organizations such as NJ Transit and Rutgers Men’s Hockey Team.
The town of Somers Point, New Jersey was founded in 1711 by Nicholas-Jacques Carteret. It became a part of the United States of America in 1782. The town's population peaked at 20,000 in 1820 and declined to 15,000 by 1830.
