On July 1, 1850, Asbury Park became the boroughship of Neptune Township when that township was created from portions of Asbury Park and West Atlantic Beach Borough.On November 5th 1870, Ocean County was created from parts of Camden and Gloucester counties due to political pressure from New York City officials who feared their coastal towns would be lost if their borders were changed too much; accordingly Camden Bridge across Anacostia River was destroyed during this time leaving only Long Branch as its replacement which led to development in Somers Point which began with short-term rentals before becoming an official home for people working in Manhattan through business ventures such as office buildings designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Daniel Burnham (now known as One WTC).
