In 1990, Somers Point lost its charter as a city—a status it had held since 1923—but regained it on July 1, 1991 when Newark became again a county borough within New Jersey. On December 12, 2006, voters passed an ordinance establishing an urban renewal district comprising portions of both municipalities that would be used to revitalize and redevelop those areas around the harbor which had been neglected for years by both Norwood Township and neighboring East Orange. Somers Point was a small harbor town in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States that was founded in 1795. Somers Point was known for its shipbuilding industry and for its sailors who manned the local ships. The town also became famous for its produce such as apples, grapes, and potatoes. In 1824, the tiny town of Hopewell Junction was merged into Somers Point. In 1898, the U.S. Naval Base at Elizabeth City (now Elizabeth City Correctional Facility) was founded at Somers Point. The base served as the homeport of USS " Constitution" during World War II and later hosted Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Hill until it closed in 1960. The population of Somers Point declined from around 10,000 people in 1920 to 3,500 people by 1940; however it increased to 7,500 by 1970 due to an influx of military personnel and their families stationed at Elizabeth City Correctional Facility then known as MCAS Cherry Hill. AfterMCAS Cherry Hill closed in 1960, the population decreased again to 4,500 before increasing to 5,000 in 1980 due to another wave of military personnel coming back toElizabeth City after the end of the Cold War. As of 2010 there were 4 residents living on site who are employed by Navy Shipyards which produces ships for both national and international fleets including America's largest warship - USS Gerald Ford .
Somers Point was a small town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,954 at the 2010 census. It is now part of Neptune City. Somers Point was first settled in 1798 by Gideon Welles and his family and became an incorporated municipality on February 6, 1824. The first post office at Somers Point was established on November 8, 1824. On October 15, 1850, the town lost its charter because it failed to maintain its bonded debt ceiling of $5,000 per year. In 1851 the town gained a new charter from the state government and changed its name to Neptune City. The first mayor of Neptune City was John Cavanaugh (1851-57). In 1865 the city's debt limit was raised to $10,000 per year and it lost its charter again because it did not meet this requirement within two years. In 1870 the city regained its charter but changed its name back to Somers Point once again because of lack of interest from residents in keeping that name after multiple changes over time. In 1899 the New Jersey Legislature passed a bill providing for township consolidation with neighboring townships due to increasing population density in Monmouth County; as a result of this legislation (Public Law 7–2), Somers Point became one of several municipalities consolidated into Neptune City through judicial proceedings during 1899-1902 under what is known as "the Somerset Consolidation Act." On July 16, 1954 Norville Sperry donated land north of Main Street in front of his house for use as an open-air shopping mall called Sperry's Place which opened on September 8th 1954 with stores such as Sears & Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Gimbels Department Store and Lewis department store among others being located there until 1990 when Macy's closed their doors following bankruptcy proceedings which forced Sears into liquidation and demolition began immediately followed by Kmart followed by Lowe's before finally closing completely on December 6th 1990 leaving only foundations remaining today
