Somers Point is located on the Hackensack River and forms part of the Camden-Newark metropolitan area. The area that would become Somers Point was first settled by Europeans in 1614 as part of what is now Union Township. It became known as Somers Place after Sir John Somers, who had purchased land there from Dutch settlers in 1624. In 1795, the name change to honor General George Washington when he arrived there with his army during the American Revolution. In 1801, Richard Stockton created a township out of parts of Union and Westfields Township. On March 24, 1802, it was combined with portions of Hunterdon and Morris Twp., to form Hunterdon Township (later Hunterdon County). On May 2, 1803, it was divided into two townships: Middlesex and Somerset based on recommendations from a committee appointed by Governor James Ketchum: Middlesex because of its larger population and Somerset because of its location on the Hackensack River between Newark and Elizabethtown. The townships were named for English counties: Northamptonshire (Middlesex), Kent (Somerset), Warwickshire (Newark), Hertfordshire (ondemand) and Suffolk (Easton). On February 14, 1871, both Middlesex Townships were merged into one with their corresponding Boroughs – Amboy Borough (now East Amboy), Arlington Borough (now South Arlington), Brunswick Borough (now Neptune Beach), Carteret Borough (now Atlantic Highlands), Cherry Hill/West Orange/Teaneck boroughs merged into Oneonta Borough also known as Monmouth County until January 1st 2009 when they became traditional Jersey City boroughs under Mayor Christine Quinn’s leadership; Clifton Park borough did not join this merger but remains within Monmouth County under local control On November 15th 1978 all 8 Essex county municipalities –Asbury Park-Basking Ridge-Edgemont-Hillsborough-Paramus-Plainsboro-Sussex Junction amalgamated to form Bergen County
