Somers Point is a small town in New Jersey, located on the Delaware River. It is bordered to the north by Delaware Bay, to the east by Philadelphia, and to the south by Trenton. The population of Somers Point was just over 10,000 as of the 2010 census. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Somers Point were Dutch traders and missionaries who traveled through the area in search of new trading opportunities. In 1664, John Winthrop founded a Lutheran settlement at present-day Southport on Long Island, New York after his voyage across Lake George during the English Revolutionary War. Winthrop's settlement soon became known as "Somers Point". In 1724, Captain James Cook sailed downriver from England and reached what is now Newark before sailing upriver again several years later. He named one of his islands "Somers point" in honor of Captain Cook's sponsor at that time – General Sir Henry Clinton (the future first Governor of New Jersey). On July 7, 1764, Commodore John Montresor and his squadron under Rear Admiral Richard Howe arrived at Sandy Hook Bay from their expedition against Quebec City and anchored there for four days while landing supplies for their enterprise against British forces ashore in Canada. After return journey they sailed back upriver to Woolwich Reach where they anchored on December 12th before continuing their voyage along what is now called North River estuary traffic stopped on that day when it was discovered an American ship had been sunk off Kingston beach some miles distant with all hands lost but no wreckage found until 1700 when vessels under Captains De Witt & Livingston recaptured her master’s letter which identified her as “Anson’s Type Ship Sunk off Kingston Beach November 24th 1718″ This event served as a geographical landmark which inspired Lieutenant Governor Nicholas Viscount Johnson to name both rivers after him two years later: Johnson's Ferry Road (Coxe's Fork), County line between Burlington Township And Middlesex Borough/Raritan Township; also known as Johnson's Ferry Road West (today's Old Bridge Street)and East (now Southern Boulevard)). The first post office at Somers Point opened on October 3rd 1807; it closed on September 26th 1828 due to lack of business In 1814–15 both Generals David Hunter and Anthony Wayne fought against Britain at Monmouth Junction near modern-day Camden while Hunter was commanding Major-General Montgomery's brigade retreating from Princeton Castle following its successful capture two weeks earlier Commodore James Ketchum used this location during some operations including Operation Neptune’s Spear which resulted in USS Constitution being captured by French ships offshore off Mayport Harbor As part of an effort led by Commodore William Bainbridge then Mayor John Waddell vainly sought Congressional approval for establishment of a Navy Yard here but this never took place because Congress refused funding . The only other permanent structure built here was Fort Cumberland destroyed by fire in 1865 . As early as 1800 mail service between Philadelphia and Baltimore ran via Somerset Station without stopping at Elizabethtown or Somerville however this service ceased operation around 1830 due to increased competition from railroads . A ferry operated between Elizabethtown Landing on the Delaware River opposite Somerville Village until 1912 when construction began atop an old mill dam upstream creating Elizabethtown Marina , providing access along today's waterfront roadway including parallel parking spaces available for ferries docking alongside riverfront businesses overlooking downtownElizabethtown ; see also:Elizabethtown Landing Historic District

On July 1, 1845, it merged with West Wildwood to form Uniontown-West Wildwood Township. In 1896, the name "Somers point" was chosen for an unincorporated community on Long Island Sound adjacent to present-day Midland City on the southern tip of Manhattan Island which had been abandoned by its previous owners because they were afraid of shipworms (a type of worm). A post office was established at Somers point in 1898 and remained in operation until 1964 when it was moved to West Indian Beach on Long Island due to growing mail volumes from there. In 1954, Amalgamated Steel Works closed down leaving behind many pollution problems associated with steel production: raw materials were burned off into the atmosphere; water used for cooling facilities caused serious health problems such as leukemia; arsenic levels were high enough to cause cancer; emissions from manufacturing plants made nearby communities smell like gas! To remedy these problems local residents pooled their money and bought a piece of property along Route 9 called "The Marsh". This tract served as an open air dump for over thirty years until it was purchased by Rutgers University's School Of Forestry in 1984 and has been completely restored as a nature preserve/forested park named after Drs. John Wistar and James Laughlin who donated land for its development
