In 1670, Captain John Smith and his men discovered and named the bay after Sir George Somers, 1st Baronet (1624-1692). Somers Point was originally known as "New Quay." In 1814, General James K. Polk sent troops through the Straits of Dover to invade England during the Peninsular War and they burned much property in Somerset County while they were there. This event is also known as the Battle of Somerset Point. The first store in Somers Point opened on July 12th 1827 by Jno Cook and his brother Charles Cook, who ran it until 1865 when it was taken over by their father-in-law William Gannett Sr., Jr.. Gannett had been born in nearby West Milford on December 6th 1784 and died there on October 3rd 1868 after serving as Mayor for three terms from 1830-1834 and again from 1840-1846; he also represented Monmouth Township in the NJ Senate from 1837-1841 and served as a Delegate to Congress from New Jersey during the American Civil War. The original building still stands today across Main Street from Gannett's former grocery store - it has been remodeled several times but its facade remains largely unchanged (except for some addition of Colonial Revival details). In 1898, Gannett's son William Jr., becamethe second owner of Store #1 when it passed into receivership being owned by Averell Harriman & Co.; however Harriman sold it back to Gannett's son William Jr. two years later upon becoming Vice President under Presidents McKinley & Roosevelt; Store #2 continued operations until 1997 when it closed due to lack of customers despite having an indoor batting cage which offered tennis lessons indoors! Today only one remaining piece of memorabilia associated with Store #1 remains: an octagon iron baluster that once adorned the front door; note that this Baluster has since been replaced with a more modern style ornamental knob! A local paper company founded by Jno Cook called "The Press" was published here beginning February 10th 1870 until January 15th 1880 when its editor resigned because he could not agree with Governor Andrew Johnson's policies concerning Reconstruction following America's Civil War victory. After that date all local papers were published nationally starting February 10th 1870 through May 6th 1880 by The Republican National Union Publications Co.; note that this office moved offices multiple times between 1870-1910 before finally settling permanently at 723 First Avenue North - Suite 3508 (now occupied by PNC Bank) where it remained until 1971 when its lease expired; then again between 1981-1991 before moving back down to 5 Front Street which remain today as their headquarters! From 1971 onward The Press relocated out west again (to Reno Nevada) before finally folding up shop altogether within 2 years resultanting in their final demise days prior to our current location! Today Somers Point enjoys a high degree of commercial development along its main street including two restaurants/bars plus two convenience stores/grocery stores along with several other small businesses providing employment opportunities throughout the day including many locally based architects/ Engineers etc... nearly every house along Main Street has either been renovated or newly constructed since 1990 making this one consistent example among many throughout Monmouth County overall of how ' transformations' can happen quickly & without any prior planning or notification whatsoever!!!

The early history of the shooting is unknown. However, it is mentioned in various sources that the first shots were fired on July 4th, 1812 by Commodore John D. Sloat during a military engagement with the French off the coast of Long Island. The battle was fought in what is now Nassau County, New York and resulted in a French victory. This event led to an arms race between Great Britain and France as each country attempted to acquire more firearms. In 1836, Captain James Fenton opened fire on American vessels anchored off Long Island during a trade dispute. He intended to kill all of the crew and make it look like an accident. One sailor died and several others were injured before he was brought to trial and found guilty of manslaughter (he had been acting in self-defense). As a result of this incident,Captain Fenton's career was ended and he received a life sentence at hard labor on Long Island until his death in 1840 at the age of 82 years old. 2) On July 4th 1865 General George Armstrong Custer collided with an Illinois wagon train near McPherson’s Battlefield National Monument while leading his 7th Cavalry Regiment against Sitting Bull Sioux Indians; resulting in 5 Ulysses S Grant Medals posthumously awarded for heroism 3) On November 15th 1861 Union Sherman’s Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter during their “Second Invasion” of South Carolina; resulting in over 40 dead including 8 officers including General Robert E Lee who famously remarked “If I could get up there I would shot him right through” 4) On April 14th 1881 Samuel Colt created the first revolver using bullets made from copper alloy which later became known as "Roundabout"
