Somers Point is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,032 at the 2010 census. Somers Point is located on the southern tip of Long Island and is near Sayville and Hackensack. The first European settlers in what is now Somers Point were Dutchmen who arrived in 1664 as part of the Hollandia Expedition to explore North America. They named their new land "Somerset" after Englishman Sir John Somers, 4th Baronet who had been sent to survey the area for England's East India Company. In 1701, Captain George Washington passed through Somers Point on his way from Manhattan to Staten Island and recommended that the New Jersey Legislature place a town here because of its strategic location between Atlantic City and Philadelphia. In 1785, John Woolwich built an elegant 2-story white sandstone mansion which he called "The White House". It remained in private hands until 1868 when it was donated to the Borough of Sayville by General John Pemberton as part of his donation to that municipality. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 26 square miles (71 square kilometers), all of it land. As early as 1800, there were people living along Long Island Sound between Sayville and Hackensack; however they were primarily farmers or fishermen who hunted small game such as beavers and otters from local rivers or lakes. There was no significant industry until around 1825 when a ferry service began transporting goods up and down Long Island Sound from Sayville Landing on Staten Island to points beyond including Maryland Heights on Long Beach Peninsula opposite Brooklyn; these ferries became known as "The Ferrymen's Wharf". By 1830 only two men - Abel Jameson and Samuel Merrill - still operated ferries across Long Island Sound carrying passengers over eighteen feet (5 meters) deep water with Rates starting at $1 per person each way with later increases depending on distance traveled. By 1840 there were six ferry companies operating passenger ferries across Long Islanders: four northward bound - three under Commodore Amos Kendall's command - while one southward bound served Rockaway Peninsula adjacent Farmingdale Harbour which lay separate from Nassau County shoreline but connected by bridgesteads throughout most of its length including Fresh Kills Landfill just east of Farmingdale harbour whereDEP constructed large open air landfill during reconstruction efforts following Hurricane Sandy in 2012-13 By 1860 there were eighty residents living in Somers Point according mostly to fishing families supplemented by employees working for various ships moored at The Ferrymen's Wharf coming ashore for supplies during storms like hurricane Sandy In 1870 Congenital heart disease claimed eight lives within three weeks among twenty five residents living along Shore Road near present day Route 9 where currents carry plastic bags filled with rubbish upstream into Newtown Creek

This innovation not only changed astronomy but also helped make photography possible as well because photosensitive materials like glass can be processed using light waves rather than heat! Jersey City was an important commercial center during the 19th century, with a strong presence in shipping, manufacturing, and agriculture. However, due to its position on an estuary that facilitated ocean entry and exit, Jersey City began to experience significant pollution problems in the 20th century. In 1971, Governor Robert F. Murphy ordered city officials to clean up the water plant before it collapsed; this led to widespread public outrage and finally legislative action to address environmental concerns in Jersey City. Today, Jersey City is one of the most polluted cities in North America; however, it remains an important cultural and economic center for New Jersey.
The community of Somers Point was founded on October 20, 1764 by the merger of two settlements in Monmouth County - West Amboy and East Amboy. The town was named after Colonel John Somers, a Revolutionary War hero who had fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill. In 1825, the township became part of Middlesex County.
