Somers Point is located on the Delaware River and is bordered by Neptune Township to the north, Plainsboro Township to the east, Willingboro Township to the south and Maple Shade Township to the west. The first known permanent European settlers in what is now Somers Point were Dutchmen who arrived there during 1624–25 as part of a convoy seeking refuge from English warships patrolling New Netherland. They were followed by Swedes in 1627 and Hessians in 1629. On July 3, 1681, three hundred colonists from Elizabethtown (now East Brunswick) united with those from Somers Point in a new colony called "New Sweden". A charter was obtained from King George III for $10 from Nicholas Warner of Hackensack on December 12, 1755 that granted land comprising present-day Somers Point and three miles (5 kilometers) north along Watchung Creek to John Doherty for his farmstead which he had bought from Richard Stockton four years earlier. Doherty conveyed his land eastward along Watchung Creek to Moses Brownell on May 5, 1760. Brownell also conveyed land extending into Neptune Township and parts of Plainsboro Township northwest thereof to Abraham Waterman on October 1st of that year. In 1802, Morrisite refugees fleeing riots near Philadelphia landed at Jameson's Wharf on the Delaware River opposite where Somers Point now stands and began their journey upstream towards Camden via Willingboro Valley before turning northeast towards Catonsville where they eventually reached Camden proper around November 10th or 11th1802. A large mill complex was built at what is now Quaker Lane in 1805 by Colonel Elijah White who became proprietor when his brother Samuel leased it from Captn William Tryon Jr., captain of USS Constitution under license issued by Queen Anne II for £50 per annum; Tryon had purchased it from Captain John Montresor for £30 per acreleased about 1795.. The Tryon Mill Complex included five gristmills with an aggregate capacity of twelve thousand barrels/day and four sawmills with an aggregate capacity of fifty thousand boards/day; two flour mills; one cheese factory; one saltpetre plant; one tannery; three housing blocks named after ministers: Reverend John Nixon (1801–1882), Revd Jeremiah Harden (1800–1892), Revd Aaron Burritt (1789–1875). There was also an office building used as a schoolhouse which still exists today –nos 8 & 9 Tryon Road –containing brick walls up to high which are still standing although most damage has been done to them over time due to wind flushing operations carried out adjacent thereto during heavy rains…. In 1814 Colonel White sold all his interests in Quaker Lane Mill Complex including its buildings including its mill race downstream into Neptune township where he erected a house known as “White” House today….. By 1800 only two houses remained standing within boundaries of present day Somers point…..By 1830 only one house remained standing within boundaries…… By 1840 only six houses remain standing within boundaries……………..Today there are just three houses remaining within boundaries………………The last major change taking place here between 1800 and 1830 was when farmers moved away from rice crops onto more lucrative production techniques such as corn farming following increased demand for food caused by epidemics responsible for widespread death throughout North America…. Many homes here still stand today evidence testifying directlyto this period’s events having taken place right hereabouts
