Secaucus was first settled by Dutch and English colonists in 1664 as "Secton". It was named for Simon de Montresor, 3rd Earl of Sandwich. The original village had but one house and consisted of about 30 people. By 1800 Secaucus had a population of over 2,000 people and by 1850 it had reached 10,000 people. In 1868 the town became an incorporated municipality under the name of Secaucus Township. The first school in Secaucus was built on what is now College Avenue in 1872; it served students from kindergarten through eighth grade until 1943 when it closed due to lack of funds. A new school was built on Main Street between 17th and 18th Streets in 1904 which served grades nine through twelve until 1954 when it closed due to budget cuts. In 1938 Secaucus post office opened with the name "Newark". It changed its name to "Secaucus" on July 1, 1944 following the merger of two other municipalities – Union Beach (later Neptune Beach) and East Greenbush (now West Greenbush). On December 5, 1956 a fire destroyed most of the main business district including most of the municipal building which continued to stand however heavy damage done caused extensive loss including complete destruction both inside and outside the building leaving only Frame & Glass left standing after years more use than intended replacement parts were not available local steel mills could not supply required components so frame remained largely unaltered thruout history

Polk issued an executive order establishing the City of Paterson as an independent city within New Jersey due to its location near Metuchen (northwest of Newark) and its population growth rate during that decade; however this order did not take effect because it had no legislative approval. In 1847-1848 Adam Biddle built a sawmill on Bridge Street which became one of the largest commercial businesses in the area and remains so today with over 120 employees manufacturing custom woodwork products such as guitars and furniture including several models used by superstars like Martin Guitars & acoustics., among others). This left only two buildings standing: First National Bank Building having been destroyed by arson 10 years earlier according To some stories even though memory suggests there were no fires anywhere near where this building once stood...and Andrew Carnegie's old house adjacent thereto) After much debate between Transportation Dept./New York State Thoroughfare Authority Officials AND LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS ABOUT WHAT SITE SHOULD BE DESTROYED FOR ALL THREE BUILDINGS WHEN THEIR TIME EXPIRED OR LONGER DUE TO RAILROAD LOSSES FROM THE LAST WORLD WAR (& ALSO IN CONNECTION WITH OTHER STORIES OF BURNING BUILDINGS IN THIS AREA), IT WAS DECIDED THAT FIRST NATIONAL BUILDING SHOULD BE DESTROYED WHILE CARAVANNAGE STOPPED AT CARNEGIE HOUSE SO THAT ALL THREE STORIES CAN LIVE IN ONE PLACE....AND SO THEY DID! On January 1st 1912 Secaucus opened its first bank branch providing banking services principally through check cashing facilities; initially using 2nd floor space vacated by First National Banking Corporation.) By 1924 both branches had moved downstairs leaving just one storefront open serving primarily check cashing services until 1945 when both were closed permanently.) By 1957 more than 50 years after opening their doors past prime days they merged again into JPMorgan Chase & Co.; remaining inactive since circa 2007 prior to being sold inactive status pending sale).
