Secaucus, New Jersey is a town in Hudson County, New York, United States. The population was 39,512 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous town in Hudson County after Paterson and the eighth most populous municipality in New York State. The first settlers of Secaucus were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624. English traders and travelers discovered the area in 1664 and called it "secunda città". The first house built on what is now Secaucus Boulevard was erected by Nicholas Flournoy on November 3, 1714. In 1798, Captain John Stevens founded a smallpox colony at Secaucus Junction while exploring via boat the lower Susquehanna River valley. After arriving back from his voyage on October 11th he named the new settlement "Newburgh" after his old home town of Newburgh-on-Hudson in England; however, by 1800 only about 50 people lived there. By 1802–3 all but one of the original settlers had died from smallpox or other diseases brought over with Stevens' party from England as part of their exploration of what would become America. In 1834, Chatham Township was formed from parts of Hackensack and Bergen counties. On December 5th that year,Secaucus incorporated as a village under the name Flushing Meadows Village (later Borough). As villagehood progressed it became an agricultural center with a market garden and butter churning business being among its early successes On July 1st 1903 Borough status was changed to Town due to pressure from residents wanting more control over their affairs through municipal government rather than through individual county representation which they felt gave too much power tonyderies such as Bergen County The residents voted to rename themselves "Secaucus" on March 21st 1906 when they ratified an ordinance change making it an official name for their municipality After World War I local defense production shifted to armaments manufacture during Prohibition while large numbers of immigrants relocated to Secaucus community during this time During World War II many Japanese Americans were interned here along with other citizens deemedoyalist Axis aliens

Secaucus has seen some impressive changes over its history. In 1847 it had just 5 residents; by 1920 there were over 100 families living there. At one point it was the most populous municipality in New Jersey and even had its own police force! Today, however, Secaucus is largely a rural community with few people living outside of its borders- making it an interesting case study for how small towns can grow and thrive despite challenges posed by larger municipalities. One important aspect ofSecaucus' history that continues to be relevant today is its role as an agricultural center for much of northeastern New York City (including Manhattan). For many years, Secaucus was one of the largest producers of apples in all of North America- responsible for up to 50% of all apple production in the United States at that time!
