Secaucus, New Jersey is a town in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 31,362 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous community in Hudson County and the most populous municipality within the county. As of the 2010 Census it had a total area of 22 square miles (61 km2). The first settlers arrived in 1765 from Connecticut on Long Island and founded what would become Secaucus. At that time it was part of Bergen Township. On January 1, 1814, Secaucus became a separate borough with its own government after voters approved an ordinance to that effect by a vote of 7-0. Borough officers were chosen through election held on April 20th of each year and Head Constable served as mayor while police were provided by Bergen Township. Borough status was terminated on December 31st, 1856 when it merged with Paramus into Union City. As Secaucus grew along with nearby Paramus and Caldwellville during the late 19th century and early 20th century, so too did its commercial center which attracted manufacturers such as Singer Sewing Machine Company (now Emerson Electric), RCA Victor Records (& their parent company Columbia Pictures), American Tobacco Company (later Philip Morris), Chrysler Corporation & Dodge Caravan Division Headquarters (now Jeep) among others. Secaucus, New Jersey is a town in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 25,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City metropolitan area. The first Europeans to reach Secaucus were Dutch settlers in 1624 and English colonists in 1630. The original name of the town was "Hudson Valley", but this title was given to it after its location on the river Hudson River between Manhattan and Jersey City. In 1714, Sir George Washington and his army passed throughSecaucus on their way to battle the French at Saratoga Springs. In 1821, Secaucus became an incorporated town with a civil government under the direction of a board of Chosen Freeholders. On December 12th of that year, it had its first election as a township with a population of 753 people. By 1840, Secaucus's population had grown to over 10,000 people and it reached its peak in 1860 when it had 20 stores and 50 dwellings. However during this time period there were also some controversial events which led to increased tensions within the community including: - A fight between two groups of men known as "The Giants" which occurred on November 15th 1846; - An outbreak of yellow fever which caused mass mortality throughout sections adjacent toSecaucus; During World War II many families evacuated fromSecaucus due to bombings by Axis forces; however most residents returned when hostilities ended in 1945. During that time many businesses closed down or moved out because they could not compete against war-time production shortages brought about by rationing programs instituted by the American military authorities. As postwar reconstruction began new business opportunities emerged for Secaucus residents with new technologies like video gaming consoles being invented here during this time period as well as other innovative businesses such as software development companies and technology consulting firms). In 1990, Secaucus celebrated its 350th anniversary; however much more recent events have included an annual Pumpkin Patch Parade (held on October 26), Oktoberfest celebrations ( Held annually since 1966) along with several Heritage Days/Festivals throughout each year such as 150th Anniversary Celebration (October 3rd), 200th Anniversary Celebration (November 30th) & 240th Anniversary Celebration (December 5th). Most notably however is America's 375 th birthday celebration being held on September 11 th 2019 will commemorate America's largest holiday parade ever!
