Secaucus is bordered by Elizabeth to the north and east, Union to the south and west, and Paramus to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit Secaucus were Dutch traders in 1614. In 1744, a tract of land was sold off for $2 sterling by Governor John Moorehead to Nathaniel Hackett as part of his purchase of lands in Essex County from the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. Hackett renamed it "Secaucus" after himself and laid out a courthouse square on what is now Holmdel Avenue near Route 9W. In 1812, Philip Schuyler became governor of New York and ordered all state troops withdrawn from New Jersey; this caused many people in Secaucus to leave their homes for fear of being drafted into service outside of America. On April 25, 1812 – National Military Day – Schuyler's order was rescinded by President James K. Polk with orders that troops be quartered at Harrisburg until further notice; this resulted in an influx of refugees which helped fuel the growth of Secaucus during its early years as a small township. On September 15th 1854 Secaucus Township was dissolved due to lack of support from voters who preferred incorporation into Rahway Township instead; however, petitions were filed soon thereafter asking for re-establishment within Secaucus Township under different names such as Northvale or Southvale with only meager success until finally on February 2nd 1860 Congregational Church #1 (now First Unitarian Universalist Church) acquired 1/3rd interest in Secaucus Township from Bemis & Sons Incorporated for $750 cash which became their first election record when they registered 3 electors including themselves (the trustees at that time consisted only of Mrs Bemis). They erected a meetinghouse on Cemetery Road about two miles northeast corner thereof where services are still conducted today subject also theretoto occasional revivals or revival meetings convened herein since its erection circa 1850 both before and after some moves hitherabouts made necessary by various fires etcetera but without any congregational services nominating somebody AS CHURCH GOVERNOR contrary generally custom hereabouts having been held therefrom TWICE previously during our present incumbency George H Richards otherwise known as THE REVIVALIST because he presided over one such meeting recently attended therein I certify After more than two years no votes were taken upon incorporations however petitions continued being filed until eventually on November 14th 1865 Revivalists organized themselves into Congregational Church #2 under same name with Rev Clements acting president as trustee while Mr Richards continued presiding over meetings although no church services were ever scheduled thereupon presumably because nobody wanted to become church governing body again like they had done twice before once during our predecessors' time AND AGAIN LIKE BEFORE DUE TO LACK OF SUPPORT FROM VOTERS HOWEVER PENALTIES WERE FILED FOR CONTINUING THREATENING LEGALLY ENACTED FOREIGN ASSET DISSOLUTION BUT NO ACTUAL ACTION WAS TAKEN

Secaucus, New Jersey is a borough in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. Secaucus was founded in 1714 as a small fishing village on the west bank of the Passaic River. It became an incorporated town in 1856 and a city in 1911. In 2013, Secaucus annexed portions of East Orange to form a new city with a total population of 103,163. The origin story for Secaucus begins with two Dutch fishermen who found themselves stranded on the west bank of the Passaic River after their ship went down during a storm on November 5, 1714. They built their first cabin here that year and named it Witte Vrouw (White Virgin), after their vessel's captain. By 1715, they had erected another cabin and renamed it Rensselaerberg (Hercules' Tower). Their village grew rapidly from its single cabin to around 100 by 1800 – thanks to trading with nearby villages along the riverbank and its access to fresh water via an underground stream. By 1801, they were able to build their own church – St Nicholas – which still stands today. In 1855, Secaucus became an incorporated town when all of Essex County was divided into townships due to advances in transportation technology caused by railroads developing throughout America during this time period. That same year saw Secaucus become home to one of North America's first commercially operated steamboats known as "The Lady Alice" which transported passengers between Newark and Hackensack along the Passaic River until her destruction by fire on October 14th off Ramsey Island near Paterson NJ The following year saw even more progress made when locomotives began arriving at Secaucus from both Philadelphia and Trenton so that residents could have easy access to jobs outside their homes - opening up many opportunities for education for young people here such as prohibitionist Abraham Lincoln whose father worked at one of these local businesses before becoming Ulysses S Grant's 36th President With rapid economic growth came increased development including numerous schools and factories that sprang up across what would become known as downtown Secaucus including Slocum's Manufacturing Company which manufactured shoes for women right out front on Market Street just south of where Broadway now intersects Route 9
