In 1827, George Washington issued a proclamation that every household must own at least one shot with a projected point to shoot any animal on their property. This ordinance was followed by other U.S. presidents, and it is still law in many jurisdictions today. Gun slings were also used as projectiles in tournaments and matches throughout America until the early 20th century. The first reference to firearms being fired from mounted guns is from 1756, when Colonel James Cook published his book "A Narrative of a Expedition into British North Carolina". In this work, Cook describes firing rounds from his ship's cannon into the air to check for landlubbers ashore. At that time gun slings were not even invented! It was not until the mid-19th century that firearms began being used as projectiles for shooting games such as frisbee and cricket. One of the most famous gun sling shootings took place inSecaucus occurred on July 14, 1903 when Harry Lee shot and killed Jesse James during a robbery attempt at The Hermitage Hotel in Secaucus NJ . Secaucus is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 26,752 at the 2010 census. Secaucus is home to the New York State Police Academy and has been called "the most friendly place in America." It is also the birthplace of former U.S. President George Washington and his first wife Martha Washington. The first settlers in what would become Secaucus were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1678 and named their new land North Jersy after their hometown of Jermyn Street in Amsterdam. The English founded Secaucus on May 15, 1714 as a small plantation by Captain John Smith with the name of Nectarine Hill because he found fruit trees thereabouts. In 1838, when Secaucus was incorporated as a borough, it had a population of 10 people. In 1960, Secaucus became one of 50 townships within Hunterdon County to be combined into Hudson Township which then merged with Union Township to form Warren County in 1974. In 2000, the township's name changed again toSecaucus Borough when its boundaries were enlarged pursuant to an act of the New Jersey Legislature which took effect on January 1st that year pursuant to section 3-101 of the NJ Constitution (for more information on this change see History Of Secaucus Borough). A post office called Nectarine Hill was established in 1714 and remained in operation until 1840; it was replaced by Secaucus Post Office #2 (becoming defunct on October 15th 1870). On July 8th 1838, John Smith sold 4 lots located east of present day Route 9 south side for $4 each; this set off construction of what would become known as White Mount Roadstead House (now part of Nutley), later renamed Dunmore House (now part of Prospect Park). On October 15th 1870 – less than two months after opening – Secaucus Post Office #1 closed due to financial difficulties brought about by the Panic OF 1893; it reopened under new management days later under the name White Mount Roadstead House & Post Office #2 with mail delivered from Nutley house down White Mount Roadstead Lane until December 14th 1870 when that road ceased being operational following a landslide preventing horses from entering or leaving that building during wintertime Referring back now to our history timeline we can say that: - November 12th 1860 - The Township OfSecacus Was Consolidated With Hudson Township And Became Warren County - December 14th 1970 - The Name Of TheTownship Changed ToSecacus Borough Due To Enlargement By A Law Passed By The New Jersey Legislature

Secaucus is a borough in New Jersey, located within Union County. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 14,521. The name "Secaucus" comes from the Dutch word "sekont", meaning "a small stream." It was incorporated as a borough on February 12, 1898, from portions of Carteret and Passaic Counties. The Secaucus Creek valley has been inhabited by the Lenape people for thousands of years. The first Europeans to visit the area were fishermen looking forributaries of the Hackensack River. They named one of their findings, Secaucus Creek, after former French governor and explorer Jacques Marquette’s son-in-law Samuel de la Halle (1624-1692). In 1681 Robert Morris built a ferry on Secaucus Creek for his business partner Nicholas Westphalen. In 1702 John Pennington founded what became known as Pennington's Ferry Landing on what is now North Beach Road in Secaucus Township and operated it until 1834 when he donated it to township trustees. An early settler in Secaucus was Isaac Norris who arrived in175 km² (60% of present day) near where he lived today on Old Bridge Road south of Interstate 95 at about 5:00am on October 25th 1775 following his arrival from Staten Island with 4 men and 1 barrelful of gunpowder which they had brought overland via Hackensack River Valley Railroad Station; this initial land grant called “Norris” still stands nearby across Red Bank Rd., just beyond sec 2 boundary line
