The first major development in the area took place after World War II when Secaucus became an important transportation hub for goods coming from across the United States. In recent years, Secaucus has seen growth as a bedroom community for New York City residents and as a center for business and economic development in Hudson County. The history of Secaucus can be traced back to 1624 when Governor Walter Johnson granted land to twelve families who erected a hut called "Wadeland". Over time, these families developed into two clans: the Van der Linden family (later known as the De Vries family) which controlled much of what is now secaucus and east Rutherford Township; andthe Smiths (later known asthe Smiths-Clarkes) which controlled most of what is now west Rutherford Township. In 1847, John Denton purchased 640 acres from Michael de la Honta for $10 per acre. This purchase allowed Denton to construct a mill on his property that would become one of the earliest commercial enterprises within secaucus today. In 1869, Daniel Burnham donated land to build Burnham High School on what is now State Route 906 near where it intersects Route 3A today. This donation helped spur further development around this intersection with businesses such as JCPenney & Co., Sears Roebuck & Co., Crouse's Drugstore & Furniture Store, Ford Motor Company's Dearborn Assembly Plant, and General Electric Company's Edison Laboratory soon becoming well-known throughout secaucus dating back to this early days of industrialization in this part of Hudson County
