In Sayreville, New Jersey, there are several locations that have been named after Samuel T. French. French was a mayor of Sayreville from 1885 to 1901 and also served as the township's first sheriff. One of Frenchman's main accomplishments as mayor was the construction of the present daySayreville High School in 1889. The townsquare, located at the intersection of Center and Market Streets, was also built during Frenchman's time as mayor.Frenchyielded its name to one of Sayreville's older streets, Spanish Road. In 1907, French donated land on which is now home to Sayreville Technical High School. The gift allowed for the school to be built on the same site where it stands today. From 1904 until his death in 1906, French was also an unsuccessful candidate for a seat on the Township Council.The current president of United States Sam Hurd has resided in Sayreville since 1979 and has been married to local woman Elaine Magee since 1978

The racial makeup ofSayreville as OFRSA reported for the 2006 American Community Survey was Whites (59%), Asians (4%), Hispanics (14%), and Blacks/African Americans (10%). As reported for 2000 census figures by NJ Advance Media prior to incorporation into Morristown Township; Sayreville consisted essentially only of Asians who were considered white or light-skinned black men and women with no children under eighteen years old at that time - an all-white population according to NHIS data from 1980 thru 2006.
Sayreville was founded in 1714 by the Sayre family. The original settlers were farmers who arrived from Delaware and Pennsylvania. In 1812, the town boundaries were increased when a portion of Township 12 North was annexed to Sayreville. On July 1, 1876, Sayreville incorporated as a borough. The population ofSayreville reached 9,000 in 1940. In 1951, the Borough School District was created which included all of Borough 12 North as well as parts of Borough 15 South and Township 24 East. In 1957, the Borough changed its name to Sayreville Heights and on May 20th of that year it voted to annex part of Township 12 North which made it the second largest municipality in the borough after Union City
