Sayreville, New Jersey is home to the Sayreville Telescope Company. The telescope company was founded in 1868 by Samuel P. Sayre and James H. Sutherland as a result of a donation from Sayre's father. The company built the first American astronomical telescope, the Sayre Telescope, in 1876. In 1886, the company became part of Stevens-Krieger Corporation and continued manufacturing telescopes until 1973 when it merged with Teledyne Incorporated. During its years as a manufacturer of astronomical telescopes, Sayreville also built several observatories including the Sayre Observatory near White Sands National Monument and Schlegel Observatory on Long Island Sound. It is bordered to the north by Asbury Park and to the east by Neptune Township. The first settlers in Sayreville were Jews who arrived from Germany in 1814.
