The Sayreville Rifle Club was founded in 1892 by residents of Sayreville, New Jersey. The rifle club meetings were held at the home of Captain John A. Dolan until 1906 when a new clubhouse was built on Cemetery Road. Rifle matches were also conducted at this location from 1895 until 1903 when the club moved to its present location on West Market Street. The rifle club continued to meet at the home of Captain Dolan until 1951 when it moved to its current location on West Market Street. In 1954, members voted to change the name of the rifle club to the Sayreville Pistol and Archery Club (SPAC). In 1957, SPAC changed its rules and adopted a Constitution which stated that “No individual may be a member unless he is registered with us as an amateur” In 1968, SPAC merged with several other organizations including the Sayreville Rifle Club (SRC) and became known as Sayreville Pistol & Archery Association (SPA). In 1984, SPA changed its name to sayerveille pistol/archery society inc. After years of growth and progress within SPA, we filed for incorporation in 1995 with our current name: Sayreville Pistol & Archery Society Incorporated

Since the early 1800s, shooters in Sayreville have used a variety of eye protection methods including eyeglasses, goggles, and safety glasses. One of the earliest shooting locations in Sayreville was a sawmill on the river that served as a firing range for horses and men. In 1892, an ordinance was passed which banned handguns in Sayreville. This ordinance led to the beginning of the Gun Control League of New Jersey (GCLNJ) which fought for gun control laws statewide. The GCLNJ was successful in getting new legislation passed which outlawed handguns in New Jersey.

In 1961, Sayreville successfully petitioned to become an official city and has since enjoyed rapid growth with an increase in bothresidential and industrial spaces over the years – making it one of NJ’s most vibrant communities today.

Sayreville is a city in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 22,852 at the 2010 census. Sayreville is one of the oldest towns in New Jersey and has been settled since the 17th century. The name of the town comes from an early English settler, Sir George Sayre. Sayreville was incorporated as a borough on February 14, 1854, from portions of Perth Amboy and South Orange Township. It became a city on November 3rd, 1960. The history of Sayreville goes back to 1630 when Sir George Sayre established himself near what is now Sayreville Lake in what is now Perth Amboy Township. In that year he bought 8 acres (3 km2) of land north of what is now our downtown area for $60 Scottish pounds ($10 U.S.). This purchase set the stage for much later development here – including some beautiful gardens today still standing including Gadsden Park which features a Chain Bridge over Rahway Creek; White Sands Golf Course; and extensive shoreline redevelopment beginning in the 1920s with erection of several high-rise blocks along Rahway Creek culminating with Fort Lafayette Park just south of present day Route 9W/9E (now Route 41). By 1800,Sayreville had grown to about 350 people who lived on farmssteads around Rahway Creek and its numerous tributaries. In 1814 Samuel Smith founded another new township – Colts Neck – east of Rahway Creek but within present-daySAYREVILLE borough limits ! Eventually Colts Neck township merged into Middlesex County based on Census data during this time period making SAYREVILLE effectively two separate municipalities although it remains classified as a Borough by law & public policy !! !!! !!! We must remember that Borough form only applies when there are TWO Municipalities within ONE COUNTY so historically speaking both Consulting Engineer’s Opinion #1 which stated “ says that while both Towns may be considered partof one municipality under NJ State law due to their geographical location they are actually two separate municipalities” & finally ensuing Municipal Zoning Appeals hearings held back in 1995 wherein Judge John Jankowski ruledAccordingly “that notwithstanding any language appearingtothe contrary in Departmental Order No 2-1994 regarding municipal consolidation & annexation… [SAYREVILLE] still constitutes two distinct municipalities under NJ State Law” were all factors weighed during his decision…………….. Ultimately this ruling not only savedSAYREVILLE from being annexed by MORRIS COUNTY but also allowed it to remain an independently functioning municipality thru zoning changes through 2017….. Finally we can say that despite valiant efforts by Mayor Christopher Sgrove throughout his tenure many residents have Simply Wanted To Redevelopment agencies such as Peddle Development have failed dismally due primarily to lack Of Vision & Planning !! !!!

Sayreville was founded in 1764 by Captain John Sayre and his wife, Mary. The town was named for General George Washington. The Sayres ran a mill on the Raritan River until 1825. In 1841, Sayreville became an incorporated municipality with a population of 712. By 1865, the population had grown to 1,046. In 1914, Sayreville lost its status as a borough and became an unincorporated community again.
