Sayreville is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,944 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Paterson-Emmons Township community of Morris Township. Sayreville is located on the southern tip of Monmouth County and is bordered by Vineland to the east, Edison to the north, Atlantic City to the west, and Princeton Junction to the south. The town was founded in 1795 by Scotsmen who had settled in what is now Middlesex County. The name means "the place where two rivers meet." Sayreville's first settler was Alexander Sayres, who arrived in 1796 and built a cabin on what today is Park Avenue. In 1805, John Dorney set up a grist mill here which became known as Dorney’s Mill. By 1830, there were five stores in town and over 100 residents. In 1834, Sayreville incorporated as a village under the name of Southwick (later renamed Sayrevillle). That same year saw its first school opened; it was housed in an old farmhouse on Route 9A until 1909 when it moved into its current building on Main Street. After years of growth and development within Southwick Village - including several additions to township boundaries - sayrevillle incorporated as a borough in 1933 with 3 square miles of territory (larger than any other municipality within Morris Township). During World War II many local businesses closed their doors due to wartime rationing but some continued operation until 1945; these include Mrs Kapp’s Bakery (now called Dutch Bros.) which continues operations today thanks to its location near I-77/I-78 exit 25B off Exit 243B from Interstate 95; Parcel Post Office which closed its doors after Hours during both wars; Donnelley Haulage Company which handled goods for Valley Forge Air Force Base before being shuttered following hostilities ended; and Jugular Juice Bar & Grill which operated from 1951 until 2006 when it closed due to damage sustained during Hurricane Sandy that destroyed much of its infrastructure; all but one business reopened following hurricane recovery efforts). Today sayrevillle boasts more than 350 businesses operating within its borders with an average size workforce exceeding 50 employees!
