Sayreville was founded by General Anthony Wayne and his wife Elizabeth Sayre on October 15, 1764 as a small farming community known as Warwick Township. The first settler in what would become Sayreville was Anthony Wayne himself. He and his wifeElizabeth were both natives of England and they came to America in search of new land to farm. The couple arrived in 1764, just weeks after General George Washington's victory over the British at Yorktown. They settled on a farm that they named Warwick Township because it bordered on Yorktown Creek (now called Hunterdon River). Warwick Township quickly became a rural community with homes for farmers and their families. Anthony Wayne's grandson John Webster also grew up in Warwick Township and he would become one of America's most prominent politicians. In 1856, John Webster married Sarah Angelina Custis--the daughter of Washington Parish President James Angelina Custis II--a marriage that would legacy many political dynasty names in American history including those of current President Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump, and Eric Trump. During the early 1800s, Sayreville remained relatively isolated from other villages within Hunterdon County thanks to its location at the confluence of two creeks—Yorktown Creek and Hunterdon River—both essentially navigable only by boat or raft due to their high water levels during winter months. This isolation helped contribute toSAYREVILLE'S explosive growth following the opening of the Holland Tunnel into New Jersey in 1935! By 1940, SAYREVILLE had reached its current size with 4,000 residents!
