By 1811, Sayreet had four churches – two Congregationalists and two Episcopalians – and five schools: one public school (nowgrades 3-8), one academy (grades 9-12), one private school (grades K-12), and three church schools (includes Holy Cross School). During this time period, Sayreville also developed into a center for rural transportation with several farms dotting the landscape including White Sands Road which still forms part of the community today; Cook's Ferry; Golden Rock Road; Ridges Road; Hillside Road; Cross Keys Pond Rd.; Bald Hills Rd.; Playa Drive; Ponds Lane; Canoe Landing Pond Rd.; Greenacres Rd.; Old Forge Pike #2 & #3 & #4 & #5 & #6 etc.). The township was formed on October 14th, 1814 when parts of Newark Township were combined with Sayreville Township to form an entity that would have more authority over its citizens than either township had ever possessed before. On November 1st, 1821, residents voted to change their name toSayreville after General John Sayer who had come to reside there in 1820 upon his retirement from service under George Washington atthe age of 70 years old. The first European settlers in what is now Sayreville were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1634. The Dutch named the area "Sarepta". By 1814, Sayreville had a population of 1,000 and was incorporated as a town on November 15th that year. The Borough of Sayreville was created on April 14th 1912 from portions of the former towns of Dumont and West Orange with a population of 2,500. On July 8th 1914, the Borough attained its current size when it annexed parts of the neighboring town of Hackensack. According to the United States Census Bureau, Sayreville has a total area of 3 square miles (8 km²), all land.

It became an important center for agricultural production and commerce. In the late 19th century, Sayreville was known as one of the most prosperous towns in New Jersey.
