In 1994, Sayreville voted to make possession of handguns by unlicensed citizens a criminal offense punishable by five years imprisonment and a $100 fine.

It is the second-largest town in Middlesex County and the 5th largest municipality by land area in New Jersey. The first Europeans to arrive in Sayreville were Dutch colonists who founded a plantation there in 1664. English settlers arrived from Sussex County in 1702 and originally named it "Newdenbury". In 1754, Sayreville was incorporated as a township. The name for the town became "Sayre" after Colonel John Sayre of Gloucester Township (now Burlington), Massachusetts, who donated land to the township on which Sayreville stands. In 1814, a group of Mohawk Indians led by Tecumseh attacked and burned down what is now Fort Tryon on Long Island while American forces were garrisoning the island. American General George Washington ordered his troops to occupy Fort Tryon and burn all its buildings as an act of retribution for the attack on Fort Niagara two years earlier. As part of this retaliation, Washington's troops burned down several homes in Sayreville along with some other dwellings near present day Princeton Avenue and Cedar Street

The first Europeans to visit Sayreville were Dutch traders and missionaries who landed there in 1664. The first settlement was made on the present-day site of Sayreville by English colonists in 1722. From this original location, Sayreville grew rapidly as a commercial center for northeastern New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania during the 18th century. In 1785, Sayreville became an independent municipality and developed into a major transportation hub serving both rural residents and commuters travelling to Philadelphia and points north. The town saw rapid growth again during the 19th century as manufacturing boomed in nearby Summit County; however, it declined after World War II when heavy industry relocated away from Northeast New Jersey. In 1957, Sayreville became one of many municipalities within the newly formed Bergen County when it was merged with adjacent Paramus Township; however, its dramatic postwar growth waned by the early 1960s as more central-based government services moved to new facilities in Englewood or Princeton Junction. By 1970,SAYREVILLE had reached its low point – just 5% of its pre-merger population – thanks to suburbanization and Shoreham’s entry into neighboring Hunterdon County (and subsequently throughout central Bergen County).
