On February 14, 1834, a portion of what would become Sayreville became a part of Union Township when that township was created from parts of Middlesex and Union Townships. Sayreville had its first post office on July 15, 1814. The first postmaster was Amos Fenton. The present post office building was constructed in 1902; it has been used as a grocery store since 1954. The Sayreville Manufacturing Company operated a foundry from 1853 to 1865 which produced cannons for the American Civil War (the company later merged with another cannon company). A cotton gin began operations here in 1885; it closed in 1917 due to World War I economic difficulties but reopened several years later as an auto body shop called "Nash's Garage". Nash’s Garage closed again in 1984 but reopened as an antique store called "Olde Bayou" after being vacated by Nash's Garage and converted into an apartment complex known as "The Boulevard." In 2003, Olde Bayou re-opened as an antique store known now simply as "Sayreville." In 2006,SAYREVILLE ZIP CODE 08701 became part of the newly created Camden County when Camden County and Burlington County were combined into one statewide government under Governor Jon Corzine effective January 1st, 2007. According to the United States Census Bureau , Sayreville had a total area of , all land. Its economy depended largely on agriculture and manufacturing, but during the 1930s,Sayresville experienced some dramatic changes that have left their mark on the townscape today. In 1830, George Washington passed through Sayreville while touring New Jersey on his holiday tour. After leaving Washington's home at Mount Vernon in Virginia, he took a road trip north through Pennsylvania and then east via Princeton before descending into Delaware County across from Philadelphia.Washington's visit marked the beginning of what would be known as his " Virginian TOUR." For eight years (1830-1835), he visited various locations in Pennsylvania and Delaware County during his three-month journey; each stop served as a chance to assess new land opportunities for colonization or development. At this time, America was still underdeveloped compared to other countries and there were no mass transportation systems available yet so visiting sites like SayreVILLE helped acquaint travelers with North America's potential for growth. This trip also served as an important window into American society which many European observers were able to see for themselves after their visit later that year when they published accounts of their travels throughout North America The first permanent settler in sayREVILLE was John Nicholson who arrived around 1796 . He built a cabin near what is now called Main Street . About 2 miles wide by 2 miles long., Nicholson’s property fronted Route 9A which connected Trenton with Camden & Philly . It is said that even though Nicholson didn't own any land himself , he did help lay out roads within sayREVILLE boundaries By 1802 , there were six families living here: Nicholas’ family (John Nicholson Jr., Susannah Nicholson), Willard Weems(William Weems), David Fishman(David Fishman), John Potter(John Potter). Potters working day & night 10 hours/day rebuilding fortifications at Princeton Ferry landing near present day White Marsh Lake The area betweenMain Street & Dutch Road where potters worked has been developed into what is now West Side Township
